I think it's very concerning. OK I'm no geneticist but in years to come what, if any, are the implications for the offspring of this baby? Or is this a part of some macabre long term experiment. And I wonder if any thought has been given to the future welfare of a baby who has three peoples DNA and will forever be the focus of medical and probably media attention.

Hopefully as well as Louise Brown.

What's next, baby recipes for height, eye and hair colour and other traits? I'm still uncomfortable with this.

Great for the baby. Some babies are designer babies while other unborn babies are considered not worthy of being born and destroyed.

There's an article in 'Nature' that says that research is being done to see if this technique can be used with women over 40 who are prone to given birth to babies with birth defects. "They want to explore whether mitochondria from younger donors’ cells may stimulate older eggs' ability to be fertilized and develop normally". www.nature.com/articles/nature.2017.21761

Quite, this sort of 'research' will inevitably continue and develop under the guise of fighting genetic defects. But how long before a 'parent' can order a baby not only of a specific sex, but choose traits within that sex. It's bound to happen eventually, the genie cant be put back in the bottle.

Not really very impressed. Whatever can go wrong, will. Aren't there enough babies in the world without IVF + tinkering? We abort 215,000 each year in England and Wales. Some people think they are disposable people.

Is that the Gene Genie?
