In my opinion, she's going to be found guilty. Another reason to bring back harsher punishments.
And, not only that, change procedures. Psychologically assess candidates for nursing jobs. And make it mandatory that on hospital wards that nurses on maternity wings cannot work alone with babies. A minimum of three at any time (in case one needs to use the toilet).
As rare as it is, it only takes one psychopath to murder a lot of kids.

Jury service would be a bit of a waste of time so far as you're concerned, I guess.. Clearly, her "defence" is not going well, but let's not forget the trial is still on. As for checks and safeguards - there will already be the existing DBS requirements in place which apply to anyone working with vulnerable people, and I'm not sure - beyond that - what checks CAN be used to winkle out potential psychopaths. Still, you can be sure that if such assessments were initiated, some private contractor would be rubbing their hands together with glee (after writing a suitably fat check for a political donation, natch').

As I'm not on the jury, and don't have to follow procedure, I'm in a position of being able to anticipate. I expect she'll be found guilty and given a whole life sentence.
"what checks CAN be used to winkle out potential psychopaths." The same psychological assessments the government want gun licence applicants to go through.
