When I saw the title, I thought that new hitherto unknown chapters (books?) of the gospel had been discovered. That really would have been something. But, it seems that the discovery was only of a new translation of the originals.

I don't do the bible or religion but I know it seemed common practice for the monks etc to use the same parchment over and over because of the cost or availability of velum etc. Many of the masterpeices that have been painted are on top of other paintings that the canvas was originaly used for.

Even today the bible is beyond our understanding. I've been studying it for more than 60 years, each time I do a study, I find something new.

Well, I'm "god squad", apparently, according to you, so it's important to me to study it. I'm not in the C of E or any mainstream Church RR.

I'm not in the C of E or any mainstream Church RR. I didn't mean 'god squad' in a derogatory sense. It would be fair to say I'm not religious but I have no axe to grind with anyone who is. Each to their own.

From what I remember, the new testament is a collection of books and scriptures brought together, but it hasn't always existed in the same state as we've known it in modern history.
At some point in time, church leaders came together to agree on what books would and would not go in the bible, which would mean there were many which never made the 'cut'?

Even today the bible is beyond our understanding. I've been studying it for more than 60 years, each time I do a study, I find something new. Here's something new for you. If all references to Jesus and Christianity are removed from the Greek text of Romans 1, 1-17 (I used the early 20th century Nestle-Aland text) one is left with a text containing exactly 1000 letters. This text is divided into 4 sections, each of 51 words (one has to move a verse that some have speculated seems out of place to a position where it makes more sense). This text now has the author claiming to have been sent by God to explain the meaning of the scriptures. The impression is that Jesus and Christianity were interpolated into the text at a later date. In this text the word God is used 8 times. In each instance the first letter or the word God, or the first letter of its definite article when it has one, is an even number of letters from the beginning of the text. The word God, or its definite article, is, in seven out of the eight instances, an odd number of words from the beginning of the text. The "odd one out" being the only instance when the nominative is used. If the positions of the eight first letters are totaled and divided by 8 one gets the first letter of the word meaning "The present moment". I have experimented with writing text using the above technique and found it fairly easy to arrange for the first letters of the word God to be an even number of letters from the beginning ... and for the total of the positions of every 8 letters to identify a significant word when divided by 8.

I dip into the bible for the same reason Cecil B deMille gave.
"Give me any two pages of the Old Testament and I'll give you a movie".
It's a great (if rather bonkers and endlessly illogical) collection of stories - and the language of the King James Version is a crowning achievement of literature.

At some point in time, church leaders came together to agree on what books would and would not go in the bible, which would mean there were many which never made the 'cut'? There are. There are books that cover cosmology, the existence of demons and their origins etc that paint a significantly different cosmic picture than the cannon bible and also some very peculiar depictions of the parts of Jesus' life not covered in the new Testament. One story in which Jesus appears to be claiming his disciples are not worshiping the right god and the creator of the world we live in is not actually the God.
