The New York Times reports that once again the Irish are preparing for a visit from Joe Biden. Now that the border issue between the North and South has been resolved, they're hoping to see the construction of a long-awaited bridge across Carlingford Lough, ( a glacial fjord or sea inlet that forms part of the border between North and South), which would further improve links to Northern Ireland. “We’ll be looking to call it the Biden Bridge because he’s making such a contribution to peace on this island.” “This whole area would have been very thankful for the Good Friday Agreement,” said Barra Mulligan, a local musician, electrician and another of Mr. Biden’s fifth cousins. “We had our share of violence and trouble before it was signed”... "Mr. Biden’s history with Ireland may be particularly strong, but American presidents and Irish people have embraced each other for decades — sometimes to the consternation of other nations", said Ms. Kelleher, the author. “I think there is a romanticism attached to it. You never hear about them talking up their roots there when they go to Buckingham Palace or France,” she said. “The Italians also have a big connection to the U.S., but they don’t seem to get the same ancestral visits that we do. When J.F.K. came here, there was a letter from Spanish diplomats asking why Spain didn’t get the same treatment.” “Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement are viewed as a success for U.S. foreign policy, and that’s why people on both sides of the aisle can buy into it,” he said. “There are very few things left in Washington that are seen as bipartisan, and it’s no mean thing to be able to say that Ireland is one of them.” www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/ireland-readies-a-warm-welcome-for-biden-the-most-irish-president-since-j-f-k/ar-AA19DBrX?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=eec7ff0bc6874b6f83de3513f2c2584e&ei=16

Seems a bit drastic.

The article is self explanatory. No mention of setting anyone on fire. Why would they do that? They like him.

There are a great deal of ‘Oirish’ in the US and Ireland is a weak point for the British. It’s a double whammy for that well known Norman Wisdom lookalike Joe Biden…and the people who run the US.

He is? - what would that contribution be?

“We’ll be looking to call it the Biden Bridge because he’s making such a contribution to peace on this island.”He is? - what would that contribution be? I assume they're referring to the way in which Biden has advocated on behalf of N.I. with Westminster in the interests of not violating the GFA.

Biden has never advocated on behalf of NI - in fact, he has hardly spoken to half the representatives of the population of NI in the past 30 years. The article above says: After Britain voted to leave the European Union in 2016, the land border between the Republic of Ireland, a member of the bloc, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, grew into a deeply divisive issue. If border controls, eliminated when both countries were in the European Union, were reintroduced, some feared that the peace agreement could be jeopardized, and Mr. Biden urged Britain to resolve the question. A deal was finally struck in February, avoiding the so-called hard border.

How do you make the leap from that to believing he advocated on behalf of NI, when 50% of the people of NI are against Sunaks deal?.
Biden has only ever cared about a United Ireland - he hates the idea of NI and the opinions of the Unionist community are irrelevant to him.

I presume that he is interested in protecting the GFA because he believes the GFA benefits all of N.I. I don't know that he wants a united Ireland. Has he ever said that?

Trump was promised a warm welcome in NI, or did that go over your head?

The Democrats in the US have always been in favour of a United Ireland. During the Troubles Biden was key to blocking the deportation of IRA murderers back to the Province and only last November, Chuck Schumer the US Senate majority leader, openly called for a United Ireland. You are trying to make it seem that Biden is an honest impartial broker in this issue when that is far from the case.

I asked whether Biden has ever said he wanted a united Ireland, that's all.
