I did look at the advanced driver course but it seemed a bit expensive. Advanced driving qualification from IAM Road Smart (formerly the Institute of Advanced Motorists) is about £175, but it also offers a mature driver review at about £75. Seems reasonable... I don’t remember where I looked before but they seemed more expensive than that .

There may be case for everyone to retake a driving test every few years . I disagree, that would be pretty pointless imo. Passing a driving test doesn't mean you can drive, it means you passed a driving test. People learn to drive after they get a driving licence which is why we often see inexperienced drivers displaying green P (Probationary) plates. As an aside, I would make a couple of changes to the driving test. It should include night driving and motorway driving.

Someone said to me, a few days ago, you drive to fast, my answer was that he drives too slow, He's about 65, I'm 86 and apart from one minor shunt when the guy in front stalled pulling away from a roundabout, I've never been involved in an accident. If the sign says 60mph, road conditions permitting, that's the speed at which I drive unless I'm slowed down by those who want to dawdle. So you hadn't left enough room and weren't paying enough attention. That may or may not be due to age impairment, but testing would find out if that was likely... When a vehicle stalls there's generally no warning brake light. I was in a company car, reported it as soon as I arrived at the office then , after a couple of days my boss showed me the repair estimate which included work beyond any damage I had caused. The estimate was over £300, the car an old banger, so I told the boss to offer him enough money to buy a replacement, that £150 should more than cover it. BTW it was 40 years ago; I'll bet you've never done anything wrong.

A mature drivers review! And at what age is a driver considered to be mature? I think the whole issue of 'mature' drivers is being approached from the wrong angle. Regardless of what age someone passes a driving test then that should be it, forever. I mean, people don't forget how to drive the longer they have a driving licence, quite the reverse. People are at their most inexperienced having just passed a driving test then with age they gain experience. A mature drivers ability to retain a driving licence should be made by a doctor, not a driving instructor. (or QTO)

I can't see the point of a test. The problem is they are unfit to drive because of their health, so they need to tighten up the medical rules.
A GP should do a yearly medical, and then notify the DVLA if they are medically unfit to drive, rather than relying on individual giving up their license.
Relying on the self-reporting of medical conditions is just stupid, as many people cling onto their licenses for the independency it gives them.

When I learned to drive cars were far slower and the roads were less crowded. It makes sense to have refresher courses for everyone every five years or so.

A German friend of mine told me that when she visited her family in Germany her 85 year old grandfather who collected her from the station was doing 140 mph on the Autobahn.
"Drivers are free to go as fast as they want on de-restricted sections of the autobahns".
Whilst waiting to be seen at my hospital I overheard a woman talking about the frailties of an elderly relative who was in his late 90s. The person she was talking to said: "Does he use a wheelchair?" The woman replied: "He's got a car."

Will it refresh their memories of how driving used to be? Bentley, believe me someone who has been driving for 44 years like me, and perhaps like you, knows how to drive. Christ I've driven all sorts of vehicles on three continents I assure you taking another test wont make me a better driver. For the life of me I fail to understand why some people seem to think another driving test is necessary to determine whether 'mature' drivers should keep their driving licences. If at some point in the future my GP says I should hand in my driving licence then so be it, but it should be the decision of a doctor, not a driving instructor.

Happy days senior, when you bought a new car it was almost a tradition to take it for a spin on the autobahn. As soon as you entered a limitless stretch it was foot down. And I'm not kidding it was a race track and no matter how fast you thought your car was, there was always some git flashing you trying to get past at 140mph, it was mad. At one regiment the CO would give out annual statistics before we went on Christmas leave, deaths on excercise, deaths in Northern Ireland, and deaths on the autobahn. Deaths on excercise were usually nil, sometimes 1. Deaths in Northern Ireland were usually nil, sometimes 1. Deaths on the autobahn were never nil, always at least 1 often 2. The CO did this in the hope it would slow the mad autobahn dash from Germany to Zeebrugge or Calais for Christmas leave. It was long known that fast cars and speed limitless autobahns were by far the biggest killer of British soldiers in Germany.

You know very well I meant to keep up with modern day practices and rules. I know more than one person who would have me believe that they were a good driver but were not . You argument is like someone saying that there should not be MOT tests because THEY regularly service THEIR car and are very good mechanics .

I am very aware there are many poor drivers on the roads, and as someone who used to do a lot of driving I know the vast majority of poor drivers are not OAP's. In fact listen to this, you talk about modern day ffs. Mrs R and I were driving through an area of countryside that had small white 40mph speed limits posted. The car in front of me was steadfastly sticking to 40mph, so I overtook him. As I passed him he tooted his horn and was waving at me, so once passed I pulled over. I got out and asked him why he tooted me, he said, and btw he was no longer waving and ranting, that the speed limit was 40mph. I told him, and it must be said I didn't say it in a friendly manner, that he should invest in a copy of the highway fucking code. Since he didn't respond I returned to my car and we drove off, with Mrs R bending my ear. The point being, on that road the 'advisory' limit is 40mph, the legal limit is 60mph. I know this because I'm an experienced driver who understands road signs.

I think there should be regular driving refresher courses/ tests because there are enough bad drivers on the road to merit it. I attended a speed awareness course a few years ago instead of a fine and points. There was a lot of good stuff in that course and I was surprised what I and others forgot .

This isn't about me, although throughout this thread I have consistently said that older drivers are not the problem. A 'refresher' course will do what exactly? Christ this is the sort of crap the government come up with to create jobs. Bentley, I don't know how old you are but you have done a speed awareness course, which suggests you were caught. I've been driving for 44 years and I've never had so much as a parking ticket, that doesn't mean I'm the perfect driver, it means I've never been caught.

It means you have been lucky . You haven’t had the opportunity for a refresher course and therefore are not aware of its advantages to you and other road users . Even if you are a lucky, safe and experienced driver , not everyone may be up to your standards or be as lucky.

I attended a speed awareness course a few years ago instead of a fine and points. There was a lot of good stuff in that course and I was surprised what I and others forgot . Suggests that the current level of driver training should be the focus rather than retesting old people. I wince at some of the road behavior that current instructors seem to think is OK. On a separate note with regards to testing - when I was working in Abu Dhabi a mate had to take a driving test to convert his Zimbabwean Licence. On the test he made sure he was checking all his mirrors before each maneuver when the Examiner asked why he kept looking in the passenger side mirror. Matey said he was checking all around the car and the Examiner told him no, that was wrong. The mirror on the passenger door was just for the passenger and his mirror was one on the drivers door.... .. he still passed though..
