Various countries still do. The EU, which officially bans ritual slaughter, has delegated the decision on whether or not to permit halal or shechita to individual member states.
In the UK of course Jews have been exempted from certain animal welfare regulations since before the war and it is this exemption that provides the legal cover for halal.
