A major incident has been declared by police after the south subsea cable between the islands and the mainland was cut. The force said phones, internet and computers were not usable and that officers were patrolling to try to reassure residents. Police Scotland are also working with the Scottish Fire and Recue Service and HM Coastguard to discuss bringing additional emergency support to the island. Repairs to another cable connecting Shetland and Faroe are ongoing after being damaged last week. www.scotsman.com/news/people/shetland-communications-damaged-subsea-cable-leaves-shetland-cut-off-from-mainland-3886842Two subsea cables damaged days apart. Coincidence, or has Putin got something to do with it?

Coincidence, or has Putin got something to do with it? Well when you consider, that a Russian heavy missile cruiser lay totally undetected of the Moray coast and it took a Royal Navy destroyer 24 hours to react. After the Russian informed the MOD by twitter they were there .That is only 150 miles from Faslane. Who knows what is next. Or how many Russian frog men have wandered up the Clyde undetected.., There is not one surface war ship in Scottish waters and the UK has had to rely on NATO as Russian submarines slink in and out the GIUK gap. And the Americans are getting very angry about it. As I have said a dozen times the Royal Navy should be posted in Scapa Flow. Not Portsmouth propping up the local economy for Tory votes. These links are old, but still happening. The MOD has blocked information since then. I agree. Putin is at the back of this. I can see no other explanation.. www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/natosource/royal-navy-needed-24-hours-to-reach-russian-missile-ship-off-uk-coast/www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/royal-navy-relied-on-nato-to-protect-british-waters-20-times-in-2015-a6870686.html

Putin could cause absolute havoc cutting subsea cables, it's not as if he is short of targets. I'd be surprised if we didn't have submarines monitoring vulnerable areas.

Submarines are already slinking in and out of the GIUK gap. Totally undetected. And the Americans are getting very annoyed. Putin can not only cut cables he could blow up the gas pipe line leading from Sullom Voe to Peterhead. He has already done this elsewhere. And Scottish oil pipe lines from Shetland. Transported by subsea pipelines running from the North Sea oil fields to terminals on the east coast of the UK and the Shetland Islands. The two most important oil pipelines from the UKCS are the Forties Pipeline System and the Norpipe. That transport Scottish oil to the tune of 9.5 billion litres of product each year from ingress points at import terminals on the Thames and Essar Stanlow refinery and egress points into, West London, Hemel Hempstead and Kingsbury as well as a spur to Northampton Terminal.

Submarine cables are also used in detector systems for monitoring surface and undersea vessels.
Maps show the A and B terminals of communication and other cables, but satellites are used in surveying and plotting their routes and laying them. So a third party would likely be fairly obvious if searching for the actual routes and cables.
Plus, there’s always satellite communications, and just as modern digital technology increases the capacity of cable systems, it also increases the capacity of radio links, so I doubt the Shetland was actually totally cut off…

Could well be Putin.
