The Labour leader is to launch a full review of the BBC, including how its Chairman and board are appointed, its independence and impartiality, funding, the licence fee, the future of broadcasting and the role of the BBC leading upto and beyond the new Charter which is up for renewal in 2027. The panel is to include experts in the field of broadcasting, including Steve Morris, a former head of programming for Granada TV. Amongst its aims will be to restore confidence in the BBC, and to highlight the importance of the BBC to the nation, and to our image abroad, with the common thread been that our BBC is an important cultural institution that everyone should be proud of. www.theguardian.com/media/2023/mar/26/labour-vows-to-secure-bbcs-independence-after-lineker-row

There's no mention of where the funding is coming from for this review, however there is initial condemnation of Richard Sharp, so he seems to be Labour's target.

You’ll forgive me for thinking this will lead to a BBC Winston Smith would be even prouder to work for (when the telescreens were looking his way)

All over the world from Donald Trump in the United States to Duda in Poland, Boris in this country, and now Benjamin Netanyahu in Isreal, populist right wing leaders meddle with the judiciary, the independence of state broadcasers, and the constitution.
We all know that Boris installed a Tory Party donor to the top of the BBC, a man who personaly helped Boris secure a bank loan.
We all know that there are other politically motivated appointments made by Boris's government onto the BBC board
We all know that Boris and his "Culture Secretary" Nadine Dorries have made threats to the BBC regarding its reporting of the news, and these threats included abolishing the license fee, and reducing the BBC to the same as the other appaling, inferior commercialised TV stations.
This review will attempt to restore confidence in what is a great British institution, and that means putting an end to links between party politics / political appointments, and the use of the BBC as a political football.

How much confidence will a review by the Labour Party instill?

How much confidence will a review by the Labour Party instill? Possibly very little in cynics like yourself, but that is likely to be a small minority.

Both Labour and Conservative parties have accused the BBC of political bias in favour of the other party over the years.
While recognising the BBC occasionally gets things wrong, I think it provides more objective information and discussion than any other news/info source.
Personally, I'd lessen its little local activities — these have seriously adversely impacted local news outlets — and boost more regional output, but not to the extent of forgetting that London is still the capital of the UK...

It is possible to be seen to be biased against both the Tories and Labour becasue there is virtually nothing between them. Their bias lies in the fact that the BBC accept the middle ground position that both parties inhabit, with some nuanced differences, and ask 'searching' questions only within that middle ground and seek comment and 'counter' argument only within those parameters. The problem is that that middle ground has long been deserted by sizeable portions of the population. So they are facing each other basically in a vacuum whereby few of the voters are listening anymore and choosing, in their view, what they do not want the least. In terms of destroying a functioning democracy the politicians and the media have done an excellent job.

I think those who lack confidence in any fair review by the Labour party will constitute rather more than a small minority. I wouldnt trust it to carry out a review into anything in any kind of non self-interested way.

The BBC brought it upon themselves. They had this strange idea that "holding politicians to account" meant hostile questioning. It is blindly obvious that their radio phone in shows and TV programs like Question Time filter the public so that the side that matches their agenda has a reasonable person speaking, but the other side has a raving lunatic. Every time Brexit is discussed they pick a sensible remain voice, and just grab the nearest dumb racist from a council estate to speak for Leave lol. I always laugh when I hear them because I can picture the producer telling his team to "find me a racist gammon we are doing a segment on Brexit".
BTW, the BBC isn't biased towards Labour or the Tories. It is biased towards the mindset of BBC employees. They always spin the narrative around their own agenda / morals. You can see that in the stories it doesn't report, and the way that its reporters / newsreaders sneer at other stories.
Example 1 it totally failed to report that Dianne Abbott's son is a racist crack addict that likes biting policemen, punching nurses and doctors, and getting his nob out in public... when she was standing for election as the HOME SECRETARY lol... can't say that a black person is a racist, only white supremacists are.
Example 2 it failed to report why Growlergate went quiet... ie Raynor was the source of the story lol... can't back track on a untrue story about a white misogynist, and confirm a women's bad joke started it all.
Example 3 it failed to report that the Congressional Hearings in the US have uncovered millions of dollars of payments from the Chinese to the Biden family... only Trump evil orange racist narrative is allowed. They did however report that Hunter Biden is suing the laptop repairman lol.
Example 4 blame Corbyn for all the antisemitism in Labour... can't actually blame the people that were doing most of it because they are the wrong colour. Only white people can be antisemitic.
