Sub heading; Cheeky bastards. The government has launched a new emergency alert system that will send a siren-like alert to mobile phones. The system will give the government and emergency services the ability to send a message directly to mobile phones. When your device receives the alert it will vibrate and play a loud siren-like sound for up to 10 seconds. You cannot use your phone again until you acknowledge the message. www.theguardian.com/society/2023/mar/19/uk-launches-emergency-phone-alerts-public-warning-systemBtw, what about people like me who haven't got a mobile phone? Approximately 5% or 3 million people in the UK do not own a mobile phone.

You'll have to die RR, the first victim of lack of technology. I'm not sure I follow. Are you suggesting a mobile phone is necessary to sustain life?

LOL, "I'll miss the warning", ffs I've done more battlefield nuclear training than you can shake a stick at, you have no concept of what you're talking about. But if you think carrying a mobile phone 24/7 will save you, then carry on.

I cant believe people are sleepwalking into this, the government say this will only be used in emergencies, but lets not forget it's the government who decide what an emergency is. A couple of years ago your phone would have been sending you the alarm warning you of prison if you dare step out of your front door. Anyone who thinks this is harmless or good news, also needs constant supervision because he is bound to eat his crayons.

Meanwhile the government finds more out more about you, more than Tesco if you have a club card. From what I can see, the signal is sent to cells in selected areas and is then transmitted to all 4G and 5G phones in those areas. The system does not identify individual phones or their exact locations.
Seems to be a system that's long overdue in the UK...

I love the way this is rationalised wildfires and floodsYep - that's going to come in so handy Increasing temperatures lead to lengthy periods of hot, dry weather, raising the risk of uncontrolled fires breaking out. These can include grass or wildfires, both in urban and rural areas of the UK. Hot weather and little rainfall can result in grassy areas becoming dry and straw-like.
There are three types of warning issued when flooding is forecast. These warnings are: flood alerts, flood warnings and severe flood warnings.
Seems better not to wait for emergencies before putting warning systems into place...

Increasing temperatures lead to lengthy periods of hot, dry weather, Wildfires are not any significant risk to people living in the UK. Gullibility is far more dangerous Up to you. It's happening anyway. And as last year showed, heatwave-wildfire risks are increasing. So why wait to put in what is a fairly simple overlay to an existing system...
As recent events have demonstrated, wildfire can pose a very present and real risk to properties in the UK. A number of the fires seen over recent weeks occurred in suburban or urban areas, the fires started in open spaces, including by roadsides, and have spread to engulf homes and businesses.
