The Labour MP for Bootle has called for a reduction in the working week to 32 hours with no reduction in salary. Talk about bad timing. It looks like the Tories aren't the only ones who know how to trash an economy.

Haha, how does he expect us to compete with the rest of the world, businesses will pack up and take their businesses abroad.

There is evidence, by companies that have tried it, that a 32-hour working week increases productivity and increased productivity benefits the country.
Are those against it part of the anti-growth coalition?

Isn’t the reality now that the hours worked are a sideshow,AI is here now and the numbers of living breathing humans required to produce or do any task are decreasing.
Isn’t what are we going to do with all those idle hands the question that needs answering?

they have been forecasting that robots will take all the jobs for decades now and yet here we are with record numbers employed..
it's a bit like Elon Musk who every year keeps forecasting that 'next year' we will have fully autonomous cars on the roads - we just never seem to get to 'next year'..

I didn’t say all the jobs will go but that manufacturing requires less people is a fact of life, banking is going on line and in your local supermarket less manned checkouts and more serve yourself overseen by a single worker. Not saying it will happen overnight but it surely is increasing and it does need to be thought about.

Are those against it part of the anti-growth coalition? Really? If productivity increases with reduced hours, then maybe we should try a 16 hour week. However, you remember those maths problems about "If it takes 3 men ta week to dig two holes, how many holes could one man dig in 6 weeks"? Yes, that sort of thing. Such as maths and logic usually works. 20% less time is likely to mean 20% less done. Don't listen to the BS.

Haha, how does he expect us to compete with the rest of the world, businesses will pack up and take their businesses abroad. There was a bit on Radio 4 earlier from Sunderland. Some local guy was saying in this business programme that it was the football that brought the business in, and by business he was talking about people getting pissed up in his bar, and that was put together on the strength of some singer doing a Kate Bush cover and it becoming a hit. Before he opened the current business he had gone into partnership with the local university and taught a music degree course in the pub based on his knowledge of music from said former hit of a Kate bush cover song.
Meanwhile overseas they run business in a different way altogether. I invite you to take a virtual tour.

Baron von LotsovI haven't done anyworkshop walks so can't add anything. Some of the jobs looked mind numbingly monotonous and others better like R&D. I caught a few weeks ago Andrew Neil probing job creation under a labour government and said that pushing green energy won't generate mmuch jobs as this was mainly installing new tech. I suspect Labour will push the green energy into everyone's home by having green energy inspectors visiting and either fining or making recommendations to save on energy consumption.

Think about it though. Inspections, football, serving beer, doing covers of Kate Bush songs and teaching pop music to kids and awarding them a degree for it - where does it leave us if these are the things we can buy with our money? Wouldn't you rather be involved in a mission to provide half the world's microwave ovens? Think of the millions you would help in practical ways and how many hot meals you would cause. Our snooty-nosed look down on these people, but for me I have not paid for any Kate Bush cover songs but love my microwave oven. Sooner or later you'd expect the tables to turn as the bullshit is exposed and we will them see the creators of microwave ovens as the new leaders. The market is becoming rationalised.
