It’s alleged that boys are leaving unregulated ultra orthodox Hasidic Jewish schools in north London hardly able to read and write. Communication in school and between pupils is said to be mostly in Yiddish so that many are not fluent in English.
This problem has been brought to the attention of London Borough of Hackney for well over a decade, but little appears to have been done. From the age of 13, many Jewish boys in Stamford Hill attend religious yeshivas, which focus on study of the Talmud and the Torah. These schools start early and finish late – according to some accounts, continuing until 10pm. They do not teach the national curriculum, and according to former pupils there is little tuition in basics such as English or maths.

There’s been understandable concern about unregulated private Islamic schools, but why has little been done about London’s yeshivas, many of which are unregistered..?
