Boothroyd was old school Labour . She had a dignity and presence that Rayner should study.

She came from a humble background her parents were Textile Workers in Yorkshire, later she became a singer and dancer part of the Tiller Girls at the London Palladium eventually became an MP , very witty and yes a good Speaker

I remember her mainly for her attack on an attempt to have the judiciary carry out a judicial review of a ministerial decision.
This was of course before the time of the Supreme Court somit went to the Law Lords
I really don't recall any of the details of WHAT was hoped would be reviewed, or who was demanding it
I thought at the time she was being overly arrogant and aggressive.
Of course, since then numerous politicians (Blind Pew Blunkett being the earliest example i can think of) have been dragged into a court and taken down a peg for breaching the law and / or exceeding their authority
Hmmm.
