At the end of WW2 the UK produced enough food to provide for 90% of our needs, the population was much lower plus when it came to veg and fruit we ate what was in season, now the population is much larger plus of course we expect these day to be able to buy veg and fruit grown overseas with warmer better climates all year round, the climate is changing we have to find a better and cheaper way to heat greenhouses if we want to produce more veg all your round in the UK.

There is always going to be objection to national or EU agricultural policy across 27 countries.
There were demos about milk, GMO use, neonicotinoids, amounts of state aid, fertilisers...
It is called active democracy. Freedom of speech. The voice of the people.
Seems reasonable to me.

There is always going to be objection to national or EU agricultural policy across 27 countries. There were demos about milk, GMO use, neonicotinoids, amounts of state aid, fertilisers... It is called active democracy. Freedom of speech. The voice of the people. Seems reasonable to me. There will be even more protests when there is not enough food to go around. There's no better way to start a revolution than no bread in the shops. |

I just wanted to reawaken this thread (started March’23)… because it appears there has been a concerted EU/ MSM news blockade on the recent Farmer’s Protests that have been running rampant in France and Belgium recently.

EU agricultural policy has for decades rewarded inefficiency, wealth, and sheer greed with no respect for the environment whatsoever.
Even grouse shoots where visitors pay a thousand pounds a day to shoot birds, enjoy subsidies as effectively they're classed as farms.
The CAP has needed reform for decades.
If there has to be a CAP, if there has to be subsidies, the subsidies should be based on need, not the amount of land owned.

I suspect someone’s worked out that it’s more cost effective to suffer the occasional chaos caused by snow in the South than to prepare for the occasional thick layer of snow. |
