Further evidence from the inquest that our police are not fit for purpose www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-64674901 They plain didn't do their job and allowed a disturbed unfit man to have a gun because they didn't care and five people died including a 3 year old girl. Hopefully the mooted criminal charges against the police involved come to pass. In a joint statement, the Martyn, Washington and Shepherd families said the shooting "was an act of pure evil".They added: "However, we now know that this evil act was facilitated and enabled by a series of failings and incompetence from the people and organisations that are supposed to keep us safe."The families said they had been "hopelessly failed by the system" and in particular by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Correct link Plymouth ShootingThey've increased staffing from 45 to 99 so another 54 people have jobs at a cost of 4 million. They charge £79.50 for issuing a certificate, £49 for renewal. There are 30,824 issued in Devon and Cornwall Police area, the highest number for any force in the country. I would hope that they have already reviewed each one.

This tragedy should never have happened that man should never have been given his shotgun back, perhaps he should never have been given a Shotgun Certificate in the first place,
IMHO Total lack of supervision and training by who ever was in overall charge of their Firearms Licencing Department be it a Senior Police Officer or a Senior Civilian Police Staff member, as far as I am aware Firearms Enquiry Officers is a Civilian Role in this day and age.
At the Inquest the FEO who gave the Shotgun back stated that he was not fully trained, he allegedly tried to access the online training available but did not understand it got confused and basically gave up, part of the role is having some degree of Computer Literacy as everything is on Computers these days he would have had to update his enquires into the system.
IMO he should have sought the advice and guidance from his Immediate Supervisor, sadly it appears he did not and five innocent people were murdered.

I'd hope so too but what I more hope is every police force in the country has learnt the lesson and in 5, 10 and 50 years on they are all doing this job properly. If that takes sacking and jailing someone for misconduct in public office or whatever so be it. They will get to see their families and friends again one day, those shot by a weapon recklessly given back to a known disturbed man never will.

I don't totally agree with the thread title:
Further evidence that our police are not fit for purpose
I'd say that a significant number of the UK's police forces are unfit to be police officers, and that is across all ranks and the administration of the selection processes...

Wouldn't disagree with that but it takes only a few flawed police officers and a culture of letting them get away with it to make the entire police force collectively not fit
