Lets have a discussion about these politically militant farm labourers and the long term effect of their trade unionist ideas (and their strikes).
Many farmers of today would not like such people. But they did what was necessary.

Tolpuddle Martyrs?
Bunch of Johnny-come-latelys..
A couple of miles from my home was where the Pentrich Revolution kicked off, a decade or so earlier.
I still pop into the Dog Inn for the pub quiz and to discuss the overthrow of the government, occasionally.

When I first joined a union I was given a book which included the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
Iirc it was a lie . They weren't killed .

Yeah, they weren't killed.
They basically went on strike for better pay.
A decade ago modern farmers would have sacked them, and hired eastern Europeans instead and said the Tolpuddle Martyrs were just lazy.

Well we already have a leftie that admits he hired East Europeans because they would work hours that the natives would not.

A year or so back, on the way home from the Swanage Blues and Roots Festival, we pulled in at the museum to their memory. I found it interesting.
I suppose one should ask to what degree the latest tory legislation will push us back to this situation, and whether protest leaders who declare live on TV that deaths in ambulances held up by their protests are totally justified by the cause they are protesting about are in some way contributing to that hardening of attitudes.

Putin would just conscript them, send them to Ukraine and tell them if they didn't fight and kill Ukrainians they'd be shot. And you'd be alright with that. Wouldn't you???

So back on topic Lets have a discussion about these politically militant farm labourers and the long term effect of their trade unionist ideas (and their strikes). Many farmers of today would not like such people. But they did what was necessary. Brave people who along with the Chartists effected much good for the UK Amazing that the law they were convicted and outrageously sentenced under wasn't repealed until 1981
