A Berlin embassy spy who betrayed his country and colleagues by passing secrets to Russia has been jailed for more than 13 years. David Smith, 58, a former security guard at the British embassy in Berlin, had an ‘ongoing relationship’ with Moscow and was paid for his ‘treachery’, the Old Bailey heard. Motivated by a hatred of the UK and a warped admiration of Vladimir Putin, the Scottish ex-serviceman began collecting classified documents in 2018. metro.co.uk/2023/02/17/david-smith-berlin-spy-jailed-for-more-than-13-years-at-old-bailey-18301238/13 years for spying against your country is an extremely light sentence, particularly since he refused to identify his handler. He should be left in prison until he dies.

We used to hang traitors, it's a shame that we've gone this soft.

We used to hang traitors, it's a shame that we've gone this soft. Quite, this traitor should have gone the same way as Haw Haw and hanged at Wandsworth. It's strange, laws from years ago like execution for example, are considered old fashioned and not in line with modern thinking. Yet laws that were made in the 1950's to protect WW2 refugees, are used to protect criminals today! It's a mad world.

Haw Haw was illegally hanged. He wasn't a Brit so could not have committed treason

William Joyce sought and got a British Passport. He wanted British citizenship, that came with consequences. The hanging was legal and Haw Haw was an agent of the enemy who helped Hitler.

Exactly he was American born in Brooklyn New York , his Dad was Irish born in Co Mayo his Mother was born in Lancashire, they left America to live in Co Galway, Joyce later was recruited by the British Army intelligence Corp,
Much later he became a Fascist, he went to Germany and became Hitlers Head of Propaganda, before he went to Germany he had applied for a British Passport which was still valid when he joined the Nazi Party, therefore he had committed treason, tried found guilty and rightly executed

Another bit of info re Joyce which made me chuckle, he was stopped by British Forces near the Danish border trying to leg it. when asked for ID he reached for a Passport ( forged) in his back pocket the Squaddie thought he was reaching for a firearm so he shot Joyce in the arse which he had been talking through since Hitler went to war, which created four wounds

1) Our government didn't know at the time of his application that his application was fraudulent and didn't have IT systems at the time that would have alerted them. 2) He helped Hitler, and it's too late now.

William Joyce sought and got a British Passport. He wanted British citizenship, that came with consequences. The hanging was legal and Haw Haw was an agent of the enemy who helped Hitler. But it was not a legally obtained passport so he never had UK citizenship. Not guilty of treason According to this www.iwm.org.uk/history/the-rise-and-fall-of-lord-haw-haw-during-the-second-world-war“William had gone the previous December and, despite being under age, enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment. His true age was eventually discovered and he was discharged. Passing the London Matriculation on 21 October 1922, Joyce applied for enrolment in the University of London Officer Training Corps (OTC), claiming falsely, 'I was born in America, but of British parents'. This falsehood was confirmed by his father who wrote to the Adjutant of the OTC, 'We are all British, not American citizens” Now correct me if i am wrong, but in order to sign up with a regiment required taking an oath of allegiance to the sovereign. Admittedly one might say ‘what the fuck do i know about it i never served’ but some on here in this thread have and therefore might have an opinion… My view is liar or not he joined that regiment and later joined the university OTC using the same lie for which he enlisted others to lie in support of it. As such i feel no sympathy and wholeheartedly support his being swung by the neck. It is not our problem if his actions and oaths led to his being assumed to be that which he was not.
