An old schoolfriend of Sergeant Eldest Son was doing the same as a teenager. (Nicked, claimed to have put all of that behind him, and last year got sent down for stealing people's catalytic converters..)

Anyone know where I can get a cheap gearbox for a 2001 VW Polo? Asking for a friend.

Anyone know where I can get a cheap gearbox for a 2001 VW Polo? Asking for a friend. The great British scrap yard. My garage spent 2 months trying to find the correct one and the only one they found was in Spain. It would have cost nearly as much as getting mine reconditioned. I've decided to just do without 5th gear until I can afford to get another car. I figure a 22 year old car is not really worth spending a grand on as there's no guarantee something else won't wear out next. It has a full MOT so I've got a year to find a nice low mileage diesel Berlingo (which is what I really want). I don't do any motorway driving (there isn't one in Norfolk or Suffolk) so only having 4 gears isn't really an issue.

We used to have about 5 different scrap yards, and in particular there was a huge one just next to the M25 West of London. You would be looking at about £50 but you'd have to bring your spanners along to get off whatever you wanted. Fitting a gear box would have been about 2hrs work. You just need a decent jack and a thing to put all the oil in. Not the greatest of jobs but in those days men were real men. You could do it faster than trying to find a garage and arranging it to be fixed in today's bureaucratic nightmare.

I used to live in them when I was younger getting parts for my VW camper vans.
