are things getting better?
Unemployment is down to 4.7%, which means work for anyone who wants it, house prices are tumbling, which is tough on the sellers but good for anyone looking for a roof over their heads and oil prices are falling, which means I can fill up the motor without taking out a second mortgage.
Obviously, what with the national dress being sackcloth and ashes, this is not something I would like generally known, but I cannot help but feel that things are not so bad.
How do you guys feel?

Just wondering why you wouldn't want to mention it on a UK board?

Just wondering why you wouldn't want to mention it on a UK board? So you missed the last line?

All we've got to worry about now is the climate crisis and the rise of fascism. Rubber dinghies are having supply problems too.

Still a three month wait to send an email to a GP, still no evidence that the Police intend to maintain law and order, still a mountain of EU rules we have to slavishly follow, still hundreds of dingy divers wading ashore, still impossible to drive a motor car into major cities, and we still have a civil service supposedly working at home.
But other than that the sunlit uplands are just around the corner.

But other than that the sunlit uplands are just around the corner. I am too old to go to the doctor unless Herself nags me into it.
I avoid both the police and places where I am likely to need them
Major cities are crowded because they are major cities so I either use public transport or take a cab.
I have never taken a lot of notice of anyone's rules, so I don't really care where the Civil Service works from.
If someone is so keen to get to the UK that he will cross the North Sea in a rubber dinghy then he or she sound like the sort of folk this country needs.
Sometimes I feel that I am being driven to the sunny uplands but the self pitying whingeing of my countrymen and women in swamps below

I'm eyeing up some new fence panels, Borky. The wind and weather have had their way and I checked the bank balance before ordering from Wickes and was pleasantly surprised. The government have sent me about £1100 this year for extra fuel costs, and I haven't spent anything like that, so I've decided to order the insulated fence panels, which should keep the garden warmer in winter and keep the eco-nuts happy. I'm as happy as can be expected for a pensioner.

Anyways, back to the OP: I've just had my first pay packet from my new job and was pleasantly surprised. My index linked public sector pension is going up 10% and I just received my first, tax free, £5k dividend payment of the year, with several more to come. So yeah, musn't grumble.

Obviously, what with the national dress being sackcloth and ashes, this is not something I would like generally known, but I cannot help but feel that things are not so bad. How do you guys feel? Fuel has come down a bit, and house prices have come down slightly, but both from record highs and the cost of both remains extortionate. As for the unemployment stats they mask massive levels of underemployment and have done for many years, one reason why so many working people are also welfare claimants. But rents are still rising, mortgage rates are rising, food inflation is rocketing, and everything around us from the NHS to the postal service, and from passport provision, to dentist availability is utterly falling apart. And we are all getting steadily poorer - at least those of us who work and pay all the taxes are - as inflation outstrips pay year on year. Our country resembles a massive basket case. We are all getting poorer and everything is costing more. But in your parallel universe full of spring sunshine and rainbows, frollicking lambs in lush green fields, where the sunlit uplands are clearly illuminated by the glare shining out of Tory Central's arse, I guess everything is fine and dandy. So that's alright then.

Fine, Mrs R and I are fine. I don't like shouting about it because some people may not be fine and I genuinely feel sorry for people who may be struggling. House prices are a bit of none discussion in my opinion. Most people are not in the market so house prices are irrelevant to them. If you are in the market it doesn't matter if the market is up or down. If the the market is down you sell low, you buy low. If the market is up you sell high, you buy high. I do appreciate though how difficult it is for first time buyers to get onto the housing ladder, which is why the private renting sector has become so big in recent years.

You keep warm and rattle their cage all at the same time.

We got about 1300 pounds Barry, which has gone on the allotment rents. I also have plans to move the wood stove outside so that it fire the central heating system without sparking Mrs B's asthma. I have also bought a few more 30 litre tubs in which I will plant whatever I can. It is certainly easier and more productive than digging potato trenches.
So far we are a bit ahead of the game financially and, more importantly, having a bit of fun into the bargain.
insulated fence panels ? I am Mr Stone Age in these matters. What do they do and do you have the link to Wickes?
