In a little-publicised judgment issued just before Christmas the High Court has ruled that the Home Secretary has been acting unlawfully in not ensuring that the rate of asylum support under section 95 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 is adequate to meet the essential living needs of asylum seekers.
Consequently the Home Secretary has agreed to an 'interim increase' of 10.1% with immediate effect.
And they didn't have to go on strike to get it.

Flip thats has much has a increase has pension. Im writing to Mr sunak now I suppose one issue is that pensioners have earned that right normally through 30 or more years work in the country, paying for the pensions of their elders, the education of the young, the NHS for all and benefits for some. Can you perhaps see a difference?

It gets better yet.
The judgment states that the Home Secretary's decision to raise the basic asylum support to £40.85 pw in February 2022 was itself unlawful so there is likely to be a decent wodge of backpay/compo on its way once the court decides what the final 'interim' rise needs to be to make it lawful.

If they pulled their finger out to assess the claims, they wouldn't be paying out anywhere near as much.

In a little known (well to me until yesterday) rule when a genuine asylum seeker is granted asylum they get not notice of this, the communication can be delayed and they get just 28 days incl Christmas shutdown and weekends from the date of the decision to find a roof over their head. Many end up homeless
The Home Office needs to be renamed The Heartless Office
