Secret footage reveals abuse of woman with dementia at luxury UK care home An 88-year-old woman with dementia was physically and mentally abused at a luxury care home charging residents close to £100,000 a year, the Guardian can reveal. Staff misconduct was exposed by secret filming inside the home run by Signature Senior Lifestyle, which operates 36 luxury facilities mostly in the south of England. It has admitted that Ann King was mistreated at Reigate Grange in Surrey earlier this year. www.theguardian.com/society/2022/oct/13/ann-king-video-abuse-reigate-grange-care-home-surreyI don't know what sort of sentence, if any, these abusers will get but I do believe they should be sentenced to many years inside. Hopefully their fellow inmates will abuse them in the same way while they are there.

Along with children being tortured or killed or both by parents whilst under the sococial services eyes. The usual social workers and agencies seem to always get away stating lessons have been learnt.

It makes me wonder how widespread this is. It's one of the reasons we insisted my mother-in-law who had dementia bless her, came to live with us. It was hard work especially for Mrs R, but she was family and we loved her. She was a frail confused 84 years old woman, so our mission was to make her as comfortable as possible, and we did.
Knowing how difficult it is to look after someone with dementia makes me wonder whether abuse in care homes where there is no relationship between carers and patients, is far more widespread than we think.

It's certainly a possibility. Personally I think there should be CCTV 24/7 in every room and spot checks .

Care Homes have been inspected for a long time, 20 years ago the Legislation was made even stronger more regular spot checks some at random especially on those found to be below the expected performance on previous occasions
I agree with Red it is very difficult to care for people with Dementia it is a 24/7 job, some Dementia sufferers can be very aggressive at times, I know this from personal experience and the fact their other half or family cannot look after them properly just not possible for some,
As for CCTV in Care Homes I would guess most of them have them in Communal Areas to not only Monitor Residents, but staff and visitors also to protect staff from false accusations. but there are legal issues in relation to the right to privacy and dignity in their own room.
Dominic Greive MP raised issues about these three or four years ago in the Commons but as far as I am aware no additional legislation was added to existing legislation, Care for the elderly in the UK should be free IMO but it is not many, Boris raised that fact when he was made PM but Covid arrived it went on the back burner

I think the UK get off very light with people like your good selves. How many carers are there out there who leave well paying jobs to become carers for members of their own family and receive very little for reward? Looking after anyone who sadly has dementia is a 24/7 job of the highest magnitude, and sometimes the carers are abused by the very people they are looking after if the people under their charge have a not their own fault mood swing.

I think that is a good idea but are there people out there who could be trusted to keep a constant watch on these cameras as it would require more people than there are in care.? And of course care homes can and are liable to spot checks by the CQC but it does seem many of these abusive care homes still slip through the net and are actively flouting the law.

Power can corrupt, this is how the SS guards lost all humanity when they had absolute power, what a disgrace,i hope some jail time is coming,i felt sick watching that vid,if that had been my Mother i would have gone down there and the scumbag with the rag would have had his head put through the nearest door then i would have taken her out and home.

i would have gone down there and the scumbag with the rag would have had his head put through the nearest door I don't know about anyone else but when I see sentiment like this posted on a forum by someone who is typing away at a keyboard behind the comfort blanket of anonymity, it conjures images of someone that is all mouth, no trousers that would probably get knocked on his arse by a 10 year old girl and that would probably run in the opposite direction if threatened by one.

I don't like to even think about it. My mother will probably only get one more Christmas in her own home.
