I don't use the chain cafes (we have a Costa in town and it's always busy..).
Coffee costs me £2.50 in my regular, very smart, very hip, stopping place, and it's free if I call in at the cinema. (We charge - I think - £1.50 for an excellent filter coffee, and the markup on hot drinks is HUGE.)
The decline of the high st - even ours, which has been named "Britain's Best High Street" twice in recent years - does seem terminal. I still use shops for groceries and small items, but they simply can't compete with online for anything big ticket or for books, movies, etc.
(I buy a LOT of books from time to time, especially when I'm in "research mode". Even if I were able to find them on the high st - and there's not much call for histories of medieval Spain or books about Byzantine architecture, etc - no independent seller has the purchasing power to be able to offer discounts. I often use "Abebooks" - which at least means I'm still supporting an independent dealer..)

Actually I bought two, never a good look using straws to share one coffee cup with Mrs K For about the price of two coffees you could have shared a perfectly acceptable bottle of Shiraz during a romantic evening with your wife. I can do both but Shiraz isn't my choice of red.

Well here's a thing Today was tidy up the house day (cleaners coming) so time to sort through all the presents received and what did we find at the bottom of the hamper our bestest friends made for us . . . . . . . . . . . a bottle of McGuigans Black Label! It will be sampled and soon

Jack Daniels single barrel. Never heard of it until recently. How should I describe it, I'm not going to wax lyrical but it's delicious. Is it as good as Glenmorangie? I never thought I'd say this, but the jury's out. I jest not it's a close thing.

Really? You like JD, I'm suspicious. You sound more like a Babycham sort of a chap to me. But hey, who am I to judge.

Been drinking JD in moderation and using it in food for decades, if you'd looked you'd have seen I was first to mention in on this forum.

Yes me too, JD is one of those drinks that I've always come across occasionally. I don't dislike it, but it's never been my fave. That is until now. Well maybe not fave it may be a fad. Have you tried JD single barrel select? It's nice, it's very nice. I have a 12 year old Glenmorangie that I havent touched this evening, that's how good this JD is.

No not tried that, still got best part of a full bottle of the regular JD. With my home consumption rate of JD it's likely to outlast me - bit that

Anyone had English whisky? No. Just Scottish and American for me, although I'm told Japanese whisky is very good.
