Rishi Sunak will not lead the conservative party into the next election. I haven't heard any gossip or rumours, but with less than two years to go I sense the parliamentary conservative party are begining to worry about their seats and current poll ratings. Sunak is about as popular as herpes and tory MP's know it, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they turned on him. And if they are going to do it, it's got to be soon.

But it is not popularity amongst the Tory faithful which will determine the outcome of the next election but popularity amongst the wider public. Those who thought the sunlit uplands were illuminated by the light shining out of Truss's arse kind of proved that point. The trouble is the Tories have no one credible who is anymore popular. If a reversion to Boris Johnson is the only alternative they have in mind, then they truly are intellectually and morally bankrupt. If polling starts to reveal an alternative candidate not already discredited who has more widespread appeal amongst the general public, then a change is possible but there is no sign of such a figure right now. Whom do you imagine the knight in shining armour to be? Without confusing the wishes of the rank and file with those of the wider public as you are sometimes wont to do? |

I cant see who would replace him and make the outcome of the next election any different. OK Johnson might like another bash but policy wise he is no different to Sunak - and he would just reignite all the tiresome nonsense about cake..

Boris Johnson completely let us down , he did "do" brexit in a half hearted fashion, but failed to follow it up, he chose to do the spotlight stuff like Ukraine rather than the hard work of running the country. The Tories will find it difficult to select a leader because they are basically a remainer party trying to convince us they are leavers. If they choose a leaver then the remainers will undermine and get rid of him/her, if they choose a remainer then they will lose the next election.
Starmer and his labour front bench are rubbish, so if the Tories could get a decent leader and sort out immigrants, EU, NHS and militant unions they may stand a chance of re-election, but I am not holding my breath, nor do I see Reform achieving very much.
I think we will have a Labour Government (just) being supported by the SNP and the Greens, I think then might be the time to move to Patagonia.

Ultimately it's the parliamentary conservative party who will decide, which is worrying when you consider they sacked Boris then Truss in favour Sunak who was already unpopular with the electorate and remains unpopular as PM. Sunak was a huge mistake, he may be a good banker but he is not prime minister material and that becomes increasingly obvious by the day. I mean who on earth thought it would be a good idea to appoint a billionaire banker as prime minister at a time when millions of people are struggling with the cost of living crisis and frightened to put the heating on. It beggars belief. I firmly believe the parliamentary conservative party now realise they made a mistake, tbh, for all his foibles they would have been better off leaving Boris in number 10 however, that bus has gone. You ask who I think should replace Sunak, honest answer, I don't know. I'm not particularly enamoured with any of the personalities who would be considered front runners. But one thing is for sure, if the Conservative party want to survive, and one hopes they do, they have to appoint a proper centre right Conservative not a wishy washy pro EU liberal centrist as Sunak is, as Boris was, as May was, as Cameron was. Voters are crying out for the Conservatives to move back to the centre right. If they did, their electoral future would improve overnight. |

I guess the Tunbridge Wells Blue Rinsed Matrons and Col Blimps could try getting another “Quiet Man”, imitation Thatcher, or Churchill quoting public school and Oxford con artist, but the party is running out of time. Best to stick with the incumbent it’s got, give him the facts of life, and hope for the best. But what’s more likely is the party will implode as it eventually did under Major… |

They should have left Bojo in place and they'd have won the next election albeit with a reduced, but still workable, majority. All IMHO of course. |
