Church of England leader Welby urged to quit over abuse cover-upLONDON, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury and spiritual leader of the global Anglican church, faced mounting calls to resign on Monday over a report that his institution had covered up prolific abuse of boys and young men. In office since 2013, Welby apologised last week after the report described a barrister who ran summer camps for young Christians, John Smyth, as the most prolific serial abuser associated with the Church of England, as it is also known. www.reuters.com/world/uk/church-england-leader-welby-urged-quit-over-abuse-cover-up-2024-11-11/And it's just been reported that Starmer, who is en route to COP 29, has refused to give his support to Welby. A reporter who is traveling with Starmer asked him whether the Archbishop should resign. Starmer reportedly said... "it 's a matter for the church, not for me". I suspect Welby's resignation is imminent.

In an article in the Evangelical Times Welby said that he "talks in tongues" to God ... and that God replies to him through the mouths of people he associates with. Did he ask God for advice about what to do about Smyth and if so whose mouth did God use in his response?
His psychiatrist (Dr Gary Bell)?
Welby has said that he suffers from a depression that causes him to "hate himself". (Other members of his family are also receiving treatment).
One problem Welby doesn't have though is his feelings about God ... he "loves" him.

I wouldn't know what he may or may not have asked god. But one thing is for sure, pressure is mounting for him to quit and when he does, I say good riddance. I'm not religious myself, but Welby is woke and woke has to go.

He has dragged the C of E down to the levels of the Catholics...

I agree with the above comments. Looking through the headlines on this story, absolutely no one is standing by Welby. The press, the media even the Bishop of Newcastle has called for him to go.
I sincerely hope the new Archbishop is more concerned about the Church of England than Welby who's main concern has been the promotion of woke and left wing politics.

It shouldn't be a question of how long has he got but one of how long will he get for covering up child sex abuse . I'm not quite clear on why he hasn't been arrested yet

But I think we all know it's not going to happen. There isn't a snowballs chance in hell that anyone would sanction the arrest of the Archbishop of Canterbury. I'm not suggesting he shouldn't be arrested, but you know it's not going to happen. He will suffer a quiet and luxurious retirement.

Someone on GB News has just briefly mentioned some of John Smyth's crimes, and they are horrendous. He was without any doubt a prolific paedophile. And Justin Welby knew he was a prolific paedophile, and said nothing.
It's just been reported that Welby has cleared his diary for tomorrow. Even if does resign, more and more people are asking why should he be allowed to resign and retire into a life of luxury. Anyone else would be arrested but as I mentioned up the page, who would sanction arresting the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Welby should not need to resign. The Church should render this unnecessary by dismissing him. Additionally after termination of his appointment he should not receive the customary appointment his predecessors have received of elevation to the House of Lords. Such action is necessary if both the Church and the Government are to demonstrate their own integrity. Not only that but also the integrity of the monarchy, with King Charles III being head of the Church. The Church of England's most prolific abuser John Smyth beat scores of boys till they bled. GUY ADAMS asks... why did no one in authority tell the police about the abuse by top barrister who exchanged Christmas cards with Justin Welby for years?... You didn’t spend long in evangelical circles of the Church of England during the late 1970s without bumping into an outwardly charming young man named John Smyth. A famous barrister, who’d acted for morality campaigner Mary Whitehouse in blasphemy and pornography cases against Gay News, Channel 4 and the National Theatre, Smyth also chaired the Iwerne Trust, a charity which ran Christian summer camps in Dorset each year. His annual retreats, at which largely well-bred young men swam, played sports, and attended Bible study classes, were designed to attract ‘future leaders’ who might go on to greater things. They ranged from the Reform Party leader Richard Tice to the Right Rev Andrew Watson, who later became Bishop of Guildford. Today’s Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, volunteered as a dormitory officer for several years, while the broadcaster Anne Atkins spent the summer before she went up to Oxford as one of a handful of female volunteers, who were allowed on-site to peel spuds in the kitchens. Smyth, who was married with two children, seemed ‘handsome, brilliant, charismatic’, Atkins later recalled, dubbing him ‘a Christian role model for many’. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14070187/Church-England-prolific-abuser-John-Smyth-Justin-Welby.html

I suspect Welby's resignation is imminent. I recall taking Moira to York for her birthday in the early years of our marriage. The Minster was undergoing serious repair work after lightning struck it in the night, the day after it was revealed the new Archbishop of York was not entirely sure Christ rose from the grave, and he wasn't entirely convinced God existed either Now I am aware more than many others that the Church of England has been the natural home of second or is it third sons since the black death (Eldest Son inherits, second son enters Sandhurst, Third Son gets Ordained....) and that only a nodding acquaintance with Matthew Through John and a bit of the writings of Saint Paul The Misogynistic Bigot was needed, but when the rank and file in the pews and even the drunks sleeping it off outside the main door think the lightning strike was him upstairs reminding his head Temporal Corporeal Anbassador of the non-sagacity, indeed inanity, of appointing an agnostic, or by Satan's Cloven Hooves a fucking atheist to the post of Second In Command, it means The Anglican Church has far bigger problems ...
