The summit being held to reduce our reliance in fossil fuels in a country that over the last 20 years has been increasing the production of fossil fuels. AND, is forecasting to continue this trend for the foreseeable future.
Starmer attending COP29 summit? PM faces demands for UK to pay into $1TRILLION climate fund as he heads to Azerbaijan despite leaders from US, Germany, EU, China and India staying away....
Starmer will face demands the UK pay into a swollen $1trillion fund to help developing countries go green this week as he attends UN climate talks.
The Prime Minister will head to Azerbaijan today for Cop 29, with the main focus being on agreeing a ten-fold increase in financial aid.
The original target was $100billion but pressure is mounting to up the figure available for poor countries to cope with climate change, and increasing their ambitions on emissions cuts.
That goal is competing for resources and attention against economic concerns, wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and the election of Donald Trump, a climate-change denier, for a second term as president of the United States, the world's biggest economy.
And Sir Keir is one of the only leaders of a major country who is heading to Baku at all.
Outgoing US president Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and India's Narendra Modi are not expected to attend.
Senior figures from the EU and China are also expected to be absent from what is feared will be yet another talking shop that achieves little or nothing in the way of concrete action.
Countries will also be grappling with Trump's return to the White House, in what analysts say is a trend of climate scepticism in elections this year.
The next President of the US, the world's second biggest polluter, is expected to boost fossil fuels, roll back green incentives domestically and take America out – again – of the global Paris Agreement on tackling climate change, which commits countries to pursue efforts to curb warming to 1.5C.

I suppose Macron hitched a lift with Starmer from Paris to Baku, to save on CO2 emissions.

[Apologies Jonksy, I started this thread elswhere]
I see Starmer has jetted off to Baku to be at COP 29. He will no doubt pledge to trash the UK economy and make everyone poorer and colder, to save the planet. The thing is, what is more striking about this pointless COP meeting is not who will be there, but who will not be there.
Xi Jinping is not attending Narendra Modi is not attending Biden is not attending - and Trump certainly wont attend in the future. Von der Leyen is not attending Macron is not attending Olaf Scholtz is not attending Etc etc, many others...
I have to ask, what's the point of COP, other than an excuse for hundreds of unknown bureaucrats to clock up thousands of free airmiles.

Starmer must know that he will be a trump and Von de Beyens bum boy soon. He might as well make the best of pretending he’s important while he can .

Christopher Hope on GB News has just reported that tomorrow the government will reveal new measures to reduce emissions. What do you reckon? Ban gas boilers, maybe tax them into oblivion, penalise anyone who doesn't enthusiastically embrace net zero, who knows. One thing's for sure, whatever they come up with will be expensive and unpopular.

The gas engineer that serviced my boiler the other day told me that he gets two or three calls a month asking him to take out heat pumps and put a gas boiler in . Loads of people who have heat pumps fitted find out that they are woefully inadequate to heat an ‘ older house’. I expect a few net zero nuts to tell me that their heat pump heats their drafty barn conversion so efficiently that they have to wear swimming trunks in January. What that cretin Milliband will probably do is make gas boilers so expensive that people will fit shitty electric heaters and immersion tanks , possibly even electric combi boilers and find out that they are too expensive to run .

The last time we had our boiler serviced I asked Liam, he's been doing our boiler servicing for years, what he thought about heat pumps. He said... 'you want a heat pump'? I said god no, I was just wondering what you thought about them, he said and I quote... "They're too expensive, people don't want them". I thought that sounded about right.

It looks like the people on the ground in the building industry know that heat pumps are a scam . Well let’s say that the roll out is a scam . Heat pumps are being fitted to the wrong houses and fitted poorly.

And heat pumps are not one of them.
