“Rachel Reeves has announced plans to replace every painting in the lavish state room at No 11 Downing Street with artworks of or by women. Speaking at a reception for female business leaders on Wednesday evening, the chancellor said she wanted to mark the lives of the “amazing women who have gone before us”. Addressing the all-female gathering, she said: “This is King James behind me, but next week the artwork in this room is going to change. “Every picture in this room is either going to be of a woman or by a woman – and we’re also going to have a statue in this room of Millicent Fawcett, who did so much for the rights of women.” www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/sep/18/rachel-reeves-to-replace-no-11-paintings-with-art-by-women?CMP=Share_iOSApp_OtherMore college bar politics from Labour .

Bentley Too true, but also exactly the sort of stuff that was oh so predictable if we voted them into power, and they haven't even got onto the serious stuff yet, such as turning Britain into a fully fledged Digital Police State ...... give it two or three years and the thought of freezing to death over Winter won't seem quite as unappealing as it currently does.

I don't see a problem here. Do you want Britain to look like Turkey, where it's hard to find female images in public? It's as if Turkish women don't exist.

I also bothered to read "Ministers can choose which works from the extensive collection to put on display." It is her prerogative to select the pieces she wants from the government's art collection, just as it has been the prerogative of all her predecessors to select the pieces they wanted.

If she wants art depicting only women or produced only by women, why not? Women exist in and contribute to society and they deserve recognition, don't you think?

Tories - Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May, Liz Truss...
How many female Prime Ministers have Labour provided so far? None. So, if she wants to put paintings of inspirational female leaders up they'll all be foreign as she hates the Tories.
So let me guess, Jacinda Ardern, Golda Meir, Indira Ghandi, Winnie Mandela, Helen Clark, Julia Gillard, people like that.
And yes, we all know what a scumbag Winnie was. So I could be wrong there, I hope I am wrong there.

I notice Rachel Reeves at her first Labour conference as Chancellor was heckled, which was nice to see.
