Currently the following nations have applied to join the EU; Turkey, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Serbia, Ukraine and Moldova.
The main characteristic of these nations is that they are economically arseless, so Scotland would be expected to subsidise them. How that would help the Scottish economy, which is already being forced to save money by watering down Jaydee's meds, I do not know, but I dare say that some Scot's Nats will be along soon enough to explain

Not even you. The present one lies through his teeth at every PMQ. One thing is for sure. The Jocks are not the Russians of Western Europe. Could you point out actually where she compared England to Russia. She said: ‘I would like to dwell on five Irish virtues that will help our union to face our common challenges ahead. First, the Irish passion for freedom. This country knows what it means to struggle for the right to exist. Are you seriously trying to tell me the likes of the Black and Tans did not exist in what is now the ROI, and committed act of atrocity. Brendan O'Carroll has spoken of how his grandfather was murdered by the Black and Tans. And the laughable bit. The pantomime toff. JRM says its dreadful. For once he got something correct. Are you apologising for Nazism? No. Are you apologising for war crimes and atrocities committed by the likes of the Black and tans, or the Indian mutiny or the British concentration camps, and atrocities of the Boer war. Or is it only wrong when it is committed by Johnny Foreigner. |

That's not quite true. The Germans used them beforehand in one of their African colonies a few years earlier. Namibia IIRC. The British just did it on a much larger scale. We did the same thing as recently as the Malayan Emergency in the '50s. |

Not according to my history. But the point being. It was all wrong. By however it came about. Now there was me thinking that would be a reasonable stance to adopt. Even by any standards like your favourite King. The one and only Longshanks committed war crimes as he stormed through Scotland terrorising old men, murdering woman and kids. He should be tossed out of his tomb in Westminster and flushed down the bog. Instead of being glorified. Lets put Florence Nightingale or Stephen Hawking's in his place. And on the same theme. Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, KT, GCB, OM, GCVO, KCIE should have in my opinion been shot. The stupidity of sending thousand of men to their deaths by charging into miles of machine guns, mortar and canon fire, and executing men for cowardice, clearly suffering from the likes of shell shock. It was out and out pathetic. How the hell can you fake that. Is in the same category. Thanks goodness after the war to end all wars. Real soldiers took charge. Like General Eisenhower, Field Marshal Montgomery and Major David Stirling . It's why people find the Nazis fascinating. I like Edward I because I like castles. All the Hammer of the Scots stuff from me is just banter. I only recently found out about what we did in Malaya despite my father seeing active service there. We rounded up all the villages near the jungles where the communists were hiding out to stop them raiding the villages for food and other ''support''. The locals didn't actually like the mostly ethnic Chinese commies but were powerless to resist them. It actually worked very well and the communist insurgents were starved into defeat. The Americans watched on and it is a major part of why they thought they could win in Vietnam. Unfortunately Vietnam was a much bigger scale of conflict and the communists did have support from the locals so they were doomed to fail. In Malaya the British also displayed the bodies of dead insurrectionists in the streets of towns and cities. Leaving them on the streets for days in order to discourage anyone from joining them. |

Historians such as Antony Beevor and Max Hastings would not agree with you about General Eisenhower being a "real" soldier, he was exactly the right person to manage a tricky coalition of very difficult personalities (such as Montgomery and Patten) and he managed logistics, manpower and political demands during the difficult post D Day phase very well, but he wasn't a natural or experienced soldier.
Why would you bring this into a discussion about Ursula von der Leyen?
You take delight in trotting out the old argument about British concentration camps, that is what they were, camps to put civvies in to prevent them from helping the Boers, the camps operated by the Germans were extermination camps designed to murder and dispose of those the Germans wished to get rid of, quite a different thing altogether.
Ursula von der Leyen made a crass and amatuer error with her statement in Ireland, probably she enjoyed trying to make a dig at Great Britain and didn't realise how stupid she looked.

Now there you go. All wrong. I am well into Scottish history. And Edward the first is not banter. It should have read murderer of Scots. But then James Douglas, known as the Black Douglas, father died in the towers of London. He was the right hand man of Bruce. His estates had been granted to the Englishman Robert Clifford. In 1307 Douglas attacked the English garrison at his family seat of Douglas Castle. Since it was Palm Sunday, most of the English soldiers had left the castle to attend mass when the Scots attacked, entering the church to the war cry 'Douglas!' 'Douglas!'. In a massacre which was later referred to as 'the Douglas Larder' the English soldiers who had survived the attack were taken to the castle's cellar where they were beheaded. Their heads were mounted on a stack of broken wine casks and set aflame, the castle itself was burned. So the Jocks are not all innocent. In terms of English history. My favourite at the moment is the finding of the grave of Richard III. I followed that with fascination. It was a telly programme as well. |
