The council intends to re-purchase some of the thousands of socially rented homes it has lost to the "Right to Buy" scheme.
The authority said it had lost 5,500 social rented homes to the scheme since its introduction in 1980 and families in the borough faced "a chronic shortage of social and affordable housing".
More recently, 249 socially rented homes in Bury have been transferred to private ownership under the scheme since 2018.
The council has developed a new policy buy back some of the properties previously purchased by tenants under Right To Buy (RTB), which is set to receive approval by the authority’s cabinet next week

Sorry - but how is simply changing the ownership of existing properties going to increase the availability of housing?
..especially when it is cheaper to build new houses than paying the market price on existing stock.

No need for new inforstructucter for one. Quicker then waiting for new homes to be built No new houses built on Green belt land. Whats not to like about the Scheme. I think its a win win

But it does nothing to solve the housing shortage - you have exactly the same number of houses as when you started..

I think its a win win If you had thought about it, the Council can only buy back the former Council Properties if the present owners agree to sell each individual property too them , if they don't the Council cannot buy them from the legal owner.

Where are they getting all this dosh from? Bury Council writes to Chancellor with fair funding demand" The council leader has called on the Chancellor to "urgently review" the local authority's funding amid a £30m budget gap. Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, of the Labour-run council, has written to Jeremy Hunt following the publication of its latest budget – which will see a £30m gap over the next three years. Writing ahead of the government’s Spring Budget on Wednesday, March 6, Cllr O’Brien said the council will have no choice but to deplete reserves and cut services as it struggles to balance the books."

Yes correct but would you rather have your poperty empty for a period of time . Or sell straight away Win win Due to the lack of housing right across the UK due to the size of the population be the property you own be it a private house or former Council Property it is the owner that decides to sell or not or can simply wait until the value of the property goes up, then sell to the highest bidder
