The risk of terrorism is among the main security concerns for the upcoming games. This includes the increased threat posed by Islamic State and its affiliate groups, namely Islamic State – Khurasan Province (IS-KP), which orchestrated the Crocus City Hall attack in Moscow on 22 March. The upcoming Games come amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The polarising nature of the conflict has prompted European authorities to account for the increased risk of terrorist incidents. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reported in a recent interview that two planned attacks in France had been foiled since the turn of the year. The UK did well in handling security for the 2012 Olympics.
It's reported that the final cost of the security operation was estimated £553m.
There were 13,000 Police officers available, supported by 17,000 members of the armed forces. Royal Navy, Army and RAF assets, including ships situated in the Thames, Typhoon jets, radar, helicopter-borne snipers, and surface-to-air missiles, were deployed as part of the security operation which was named Operation Olympics by the Ministry of Defence...

Incredible, I'm listening to an item about the Olympics. It seems more than half a million tickets are still unsold, and ticket prices for the opening ceremony range from €900 to €2,750. That's just for the opening ceremony lol.

I think I agreed with you right up to the 2012 opening ceremony. Then I was caught up in the general atmosphere and I think the UK put on a games that's been envied by others.
Relatives in Paris sound just like me in early 2012 — traffic restrictions, access denied to various places, personal inconvenience, etc, are all being moaned about.
I guess Paris doesn't have the old used up industrialised sites London had, so it's employing the sites it has across the city.
We're expecting to follow the Olympic spectacle — let's hope it's not another Munich...

A lot of people in London were very pissed off with the 2012 Olympics and not just for the period the games were on. For years prior to the games locals were forced to endure constant construction noise and severe traffic restrictions, they were banned from driving down their own streets let alone parking in them. The Olympics needs a complete overhaul, it's not about sport it's about sponsorship, big business, and virtue signalling. I imagine the ancient Greeks would be horrified to see what the modern games have turned into. And yes indeed, lets hope we don't see another Munich but lets face it, with events in Israel and millions of Muslims in a borderless EU I imagine the French interior minister (Home Sec) is having sleepless nights. And who could blame him. |

The 2012 Olympics was the most ridiculous waste of money - £11 Billion down the tubes for a scheme that was originally budgeted at £2.5 Billion.
The only lasting thing to come out of it was a cheap stadium for West Ham..

Hamas have released a video threatening the Olympics in Paris. The terrorists accuse Macron of siding with Israel, supplying arms to murder their children, and they say that blood will run in the streets of Paris. At the end of the video the terrorist holds up a (fake, I hope) severed head.
You have to take notice of these terrorists, Hamas, they mean what they say and often carry out their threats. It's why Islamist terrorism needs to be defeated, wherever it crops up.

In a review: The Best and Worst Olympics Financial Planning, Investopedia reckons, "The lifetime financial position of the London Olympics was to break even, meaning the event paid for itself. All of the named advantages of hosting the games, including the long-term plans for the Olympic Stadium, resulted in a positive outcome for the United Kingdom and its citizens."
We live almost within walking distance of the Olympic Park. The transformation of the land around the park turned it from a landscape of scrapyards, dodgy car repairers, old white goods dumps, etc, into a real benefit for the whole of London and its visitors...

Given the cost overrun was of epic proportions I'd love to see how they measure this break even point. If the original plan was for a return of over £11 Billion when only spending just over £2 Billion then that would have produced an almost £10 Billion profit on the venture - I don't recall anyone suggesting at the time that this would be possible.

This is a very coordinated attack, three of the four main lines into Paris have been sabotaged. The fourth line, the Lyon route was targeted but that attack was discovered and disabled. More and more commentators seem to think this level of sophistication points to Putin.  |
