Hypersonic sub launched cruise missiles? It is possible to shoot down cruise missiles with fighter aircraft, the Israelis have done it. It's a question of how good your air to air missile is. Cheaper the launch platform the more missiles you can buy to equip them.

Multi roll aircraft are the cheap option, as far as Europe is concerned, and to a lesser extent the US, post cold war multi roll aircraft has been the cheap option. Multi roll aircraft can perform most tasks to a degree but do not excel at any task. On ther other hand, single roll aircraft do not excel at most tasks but are superb at the single task they were designed for, which makes them very expensive and there is no better example than the A10. Yes I know it's old kit, but as far as close air support goes, it cant be beaten. Slow, low and deadly.

Really good at what it does, the engines are positioned where they are to make it harder to damage them, there's devices to prevent flameouts, and the pilot sits in a "titanium bath" armoured cockpit.
Sadly they're being phased out in favour of the F35 multi role aircraft, which is a lot more expensive to operate.
