Refugees and asylum seekers must be treated with the proper legal due process, and without prejudice or pre-conceieved attitides or opinions.
In law, a person who enters the UK without a passport, without going through immigration and the proper channels is an Illegal Immigrant, however if that person then declares to an official that they seek asylum, at that precise moment he or she is an asylum seeker.
Asylum Seekers are not illegal, and as such they should not be held in accommodation which would otherwise be used as a prison for criminals. In the cold reality however, we have to accept that a person seeking asylum could abscond and disappear, therefore it seems logical to make asylum seekers agree to not been allowed to have the same unlimited freedoms that people who have a right to be here have, including British citizens.
To me, its about balancing our commitments to international convention, with our security and borders.
Asylum seekers are not criminals, but we dont want unprocessed claimants running free
