The thing is Bancroft, everyone knows a 'life' sentence never, or very rarely means life. A life sentence with a proviso that a 20 year old killer should serve 20 to 30 years is not by any stretch of the imagination life. The judge should not, in my opinion, say he is sentencing a killer to life in prison unless he means life. It just makes the system look weak when a supposed life sentence turns out to be 20 years. Christ the train robbers didn't get life sentences, but they did get 30 years for stealing cash. These days murderers get life, and in many cases are released after as little as 20 years. And some people say we are not soft on crime. I am in agreement with you here. But then what do you expect when the Judiciary and Penal system are controlled by a wealthy elite? Crimes against wealth will always carry higher tariffs than crimes against the person, especially where that person is not one of the wealthy elite. The only crime where the "value" of a thing should have major significance is, IMO, Criminal Damage. All The Best The Judiciary and Penal system, like every facet of society today are controlled by left leaning authorities. Whether they are considered to be a wealthy elite is neither here nor there. The government, the civil service, the police and courts, are all politically left of centre. This creates an atmosphere in which the authorities are seen as soft on crime, and with judges being told to give criminals more lenient sentences, how could anyone disagree. A good way of easing pressure on the prison system would be to deport 11,000 foreign criminals, but the left wing Home Office, left wing lawyers, and left wing charities who are funded by the government, make it impossible. We need a complete reset. If future governments are going to govern in the best interests of this country they have to move to the centre right and start putting British people first.

Which is great if we have a police force that a) never makes mistakes, b) is not institutionally racist, c) does not have significant levels of corruption, and d) is not under the control of a secretive group that protects its own at the expense of real justice. But right now we have none of those thongs, and so what you suggest will just lead to innocent people being killed for crimes they very likely did not commit. All The Best I think you have a rather low opinion of the Police force ,CPS and Judges and Juries if you think innocent people will be found guilty of Murder . The level of proof is such that innocent people being found guilty is minimal in a worst case scenario . If we were to bring back the death penalty I would imagine the degrees of murder would just shift into new sentencing brackets . From the sentencing guidelines the whole life terms and 30 years would become the death penalty (these scumbags would just about come in under the bar ) In fact I do have a low opinion of forensic scientists involved in such cases historically, an even lower opinion of defence barristers, because there have been some right howlers were the defence has manifestly failed to make clear failings plain, and an even lower opinion of prosecution barristers, the cps and the police because they have similarly fucked up
But my interest in seeing certain people swing arises from their behaviour whilst inside, and whilst on remand, and is directly related to their sworn desire to see the witnesses to their crimes offed so they wil not be convicted for lack of evidence. So I'm not terribly concerned at PV's fears. We have long gone beyond that state. I see today www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-68778636 that Vietnam is preparing to hang a billionaire tax dodging mooney laundering fraudster. Given that Vennels let innocent people die wrongly smeared by her lies, maybe we should follow their example. I bet numerous politicians would find a way to take the Chiltern Hundreds and run off to somewhere Blair has arranged to have no extradition treaty ................

They are controlled by two things: 1) Day to Day Functioning That is primarily controlled by funding, can they afford to do the job they are supposed to so? Which government has presided over the biggest cuts to the budgets for those things in my life time? Conservatives. So NOT "left leaning" anything. 2) Policy & Procedure The current Conservative Government (NOT "left leaning") has been in power for quite some time now. They have had ample time to make changes if they wanted to do do. They did not. Still NOT a problem caused by "left leaning" anything though Can you point to single aspect of either policy and procedure, or government funding, that is ACTUALLY controlled by a "left leaning"... ...well, anything at all? I am guessing you can't and are just throwing "left leaning" out there in the hope of fooling people who follow dog-whistle propaganda. All The Best

All The Best I'm tempted to think you posted that ^ with tongue firmly in cheek. However, lets for a moment assume otherwise. Firstly, you appear to be labouring under the illusion, or delusion, that the current government is Conservative. It is not. Blairs government was more Conservative than this government. Ever since the ConLib coalition in 2010 the Tories have moved ever more to the centre and Sunak is the most centrist conservative prime minister in the history of the party. We have never had authorities in this country who are more sympathetic to the left than they are now. The police and courts are openly sympathetic to disruptive lefties and minorities. The Home Office are openly sympathetic to foreign criminals, and pro Palestine civil servants have threatened to take the government to court for Christs sake, and you claim the authorities in this country are not left leaning! Do you actually understand what left and right is on the political spectrum?

The current government is no more Left Wing than Kier Starmer is, and he is a full on fanboi of Tony Blair. Desiring your employer, in the case the Government, to abide by the law is not called "left leaning" it is called "having a moral compass". Oh, and BTW, anyone who thinks discourse on Modern Politics can be broken down to just the "left and right on the political spectrum" is not sufficiently intellectually equipped to discuss politics in an informed grown up manner; this is usually fully demonstrated by them referring to those who disagree with them as "lefties". All The Best

All The Best Oh dear, are we having a lefty tantrum? Calm down dear you'll do yourself a mischief. But wait, hold the front page! Could it be, is there a point we agree on... up the page I said Blair was more Conservative than this government. You say Starmer is a fan of Blair and, 'I agree'. You see, even though you're a delusional lefty who would know what a political spectrum was if you tripped over it, there's always common ground.

I know what the political spectrum is - insufficient for a clear understanding of modern politivs. I, like most people, could not simply point to one position of the traditional single axis spectrum an say "this is where I stand". In fact I believe it would be fundamentally impossible for any rational person to claim they could. On some things, state ownership of essential utilities for example, I am much further left than the Labour Party (who are more left leaning than the Conservatives - if we must use just a single spectrum). On other things, crime and punishment - especially relating to drugs offences, offences against the person etc, I am much further to "the right" than almost all Conservatives. In reality an accurate view of a person's political leanings would require, at the least, a three axis matrix, and likely a 4th axis as well. All The Best

The Guardian would refer to them and "she" and "her" if they were wearing a skirt.
