New public order powers to prevent “disruptive” protests will come into force from Friday.
The Serious Disruption Prevention Orders will aim to prevent individuals from repeatedly causing serious disruption at protests.
Civil liberties organisation Liberty described the legislation as “a shameless attempt” by the Government to reduce the right to protest.
The new orders can impose a range of restraints including preventing people from being in a particular place or area, participating in disruptive activities and being with protest groups at given times.
Home Secretary James Cleverly said the Government ‘have introduced these new powers to ensure that anyone who ignores warnings from our law enforcement cannot continue to cause turmoil unpunished’
They can also stop individuals from using the internet to encourage protest-related offences.
These orders can be imposed on those who have, on at least two occasions, committed protest-related offences, for example locking-on, or breached the conditions of an injunction.
Serious Disruption Prevention Orders were introduced as part of the Public Order Act 2023, which was passed last year, and breaching an order will be a criminal offence that will carry a maximum penalty of six months in prison and/or an unlimited fine.
Home Secretary James Cleverly said: “The public has a democratic right to protest and this government will always uphold that.
“However, recent months have shown certain individuals are just dedicated to wreaking havoc and causing severe disruption to the everyday lives of the public.
“This is why we have introduced these new powers to ensure that anyone who ignores warnings from our law enforcement cannot continue to cause turmoil unpunished.”
The introduction of the new orders is the latest step in the government’s crackdown on “disruptive protests”.
Jodie Beck, policy and campaigns officer at Liberty, said: “These measures are a shameless attempt to prevent people from being able to make their voices heard on the issues that matter most to them.
“In recent years, the Government has repeatedly introduced new laws which have reduced our right to protest.

The Left and their Hamas buddies are giving government Stalinists every excuse they need to strip us of our democratic rights. There will be no legal means to genuinely tackle Big State once those like Cleverly have trashed the system.

IMO The response from the Government is to deal more effectively with a minority of serial demonstrators that do not Protest Peacefully that have been arrested more than once, those that lock themselves on, glue themselves to the roads, they are more of a threat to our Democratic Rights than this amendment to current Legislation.

Speakers’ Corner has been the place people have been able to voice their opinions for many years, but that’s now become too small scale for today’s activists. So why not do like Brazil did with Carnival when it outgrew Rio — have a special dedicated space for people to perform and be noticed? Battersea Park and/or Hyde Park could house such venues, then all other disrupting demos could be made illegal and those blocking London streets could be carted off and charged…

The fact they do not is indicative of one or some of several things, insufficient police, a lack of will to control the demos, further desire to create new laws to control the populace, general incompetence, giving in to intimidation.

I agree with you on one point " Not Enough Police" the resent large Protest Marches of up to 200,000 have been well Policed IMO the Police actually organise them with the People who want to Protest, when it starts which route they can take and when it comes to end very little disorder and the amounts of arrests have been minimal. This addition to the Public Order Act is to deal with those who do not Protest Peacefully, they are the ones the Police know little if anything about Pop Up Protests in several different locations, even on the Motorways, glue themselves to roads, lock themselves on the Petrol Rankers etc , those Protesters that have been arrested twice for that sort of unacceptable behaviour can now as I understand it can now be slapped with a Court Order banning them for taking part in Protests

There was another Protest in London today about a thousand attended re Palestine
The annual rally – organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) in support of Palestine – has been criticised in the past after participants flew flags of the Lebanese militant Hezbollah group and brandished signs with allegedly antisemitic messages.
The Met said while its powers “do not extend to policing taste and decency”, it would take action if the “line into criminality is crossed”, including the use of hate speech or supporting a proscribed group.
At the same time, a pro-Israel counter-protest is to be held in Parliament Square. The pro-Palestinian march will pass by on its route to Whitehall.
The demonstrations come on the same day new public order powers to prevent “serious disruption” at protests come into force.
Serious Disruption Prevention Orders are court orders that can impose restraints on individuals who have committed protest-related offences on at least two occasions, potentially banning them from being in certain areas or being with protest groups at given times.
Commander Colin Wingrove, who is leading the policing operation on Friday, said: “The rights of people to express their views through protest must be protected, and our officers will ensure they are, but anyone who abuses those rights and uses them as an opportunity to commit offences or to promote hate can expect to face police action.”
He added the Met had been in contact with the organisers of both demonstrations to ensure their events “remain within the law”, adding that the force will “police without fear or favour right up to the line of the law”.

From the Independent 20 mins ago
Multiple arrests have been made after thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters marched through central London for the annual Al Quds Day demonstration.
The protesters marched from the Home Office to Downing Street on Friday afternoon.

Protesters, some wearing masks covering the bottoms of their faces, brandished pro-Palestinian signs and banners outside the Home Office.
One large banner was unfurled to encourage young people to “carry the struggle forward”, while another encouraged people to “boycott Israel”.

Designating a central one to be used for demonstrations and protest gathering would be unlikely to disrupt the capital’s recreational facilities…

It'll just be brainwashed Lefties screaming at a picture of a Jew. The Left violently attack everyone who isn't in agreement with them, which is why politicians, corporations and the corporate media sponsor them. They do this whilst protesting about things that normal people aren't opposed to or just don't give a big enough sheet about, and smash things up whilst The Guardian and the BBC treat them like little darlings.
The whole thing is totally rigged and cringe. At least the poll tax rioters had balls and the fight was real. They got a partial victory, even if it was only in name.
