Afaik there are plans for desalination plants in Essex and ( maybe ) Suffolk. It was in the regional news a few days ago They better hurry up as England is about to run out of water. By the way. The average water cost in America is around £15 for 1000 gallons of water. Not to mention the cost of the plant and its output. To put that in perspective. It will end up like Hinkley Point. Owned by the French, now over budget by £13 billion, . Now not likely to open till 2031. Well over time. To put that in perspective. If you can remember the old storage tanks in attics. They held around 60 gallons. Flushing a shite away will get really expensive once the foreign shareholders take control You do know that Loch Ness in Scotland holds more water than the rest of the UK put together. Take Loch Ness out of the equation and the same applies to Loch Lomond. Take those two out of the equation and the same applies to Loch Katrine, which supplies Glasgow. Hydro added to wave and wind is why Scotland can power itself on renewable alone, .And oh there is more human excrement floating of the English coast, and indeed not contaminating France. Every country with sewers lets sewage into the sea they just don't shout about it.
My daughter was travelling around Europe and when in Italy I told her that later she said that explains the smell when they were on a certain Italian beach.
Also where she lives in 'green' NZ there is a river about 20kms away that has black water going into the sea, it allegedly has waste from a paper mill yet I think sewage goes there too.
The problem is that it is expensive to treat and extract water from sewage so a lot goes to the sea.
The crucial thing is not to allow sewage to get into drinking water or rivers that are designated important for local environment.
Largely it is a problem for businesses they tend to use a lot of water and have overflow pipes leading to rivers.
It will take tens of billions to fix properly and can't see more being done than a sticking plaster.

One of the more entertaining consequences of the several cycles was the fact that the treatment process did pretty much bugger all about removing the large quantity of contraceptive hormones from the water Unilever, Wellcome and Glaxo recruited teams from across the UK to fit ion exchange columns to recover the chemicals in thirty outfalls that I know of, but prior to this, most of London male, female, infant to OAP was on the pill whether they liked it or not !!!!! |
