Sadiq Khan braced for major blow as Government backs Bill to SCRAP Ulez expansionThe Government has decided to back a Tory MP's Private Member's Bill seeking to scrap the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) in a move which could cause a major upset for Sadiq Khan. The Greater London Low Emission Zone Charging (Amendment) Bill, introduced by MP Gareth Johnson, had its second reading in the Commons today. A 'source' close to the London Mayor described the proposed legislation as an "unprecedented assault on democracy". www.gbnews.com/politics/sadiq-khan-gareth-johnson-ulez-private-members-bill

They would say that wouldn't they. It is about time that we pushed back rather more on this sort of crap, all the 20 mph speed limits that have been imposed due to ideological rather than safety reasons should be binned as well. Let's hope for a bit more unprecedented assaults on democracy.

If the ULEZ and expansion thereof were not a pet project of the Muslim mayor of London, what would be the objection to it/them?

If the ULEZ and expansion thereof were not a pet project of the Muslim mayor of London, what would be the objection to it/them? It's unnecessary. It's just another in a long list of attacks on the motorist. Using motorists as a cash cow has become acceptable, trendy even. It's got to stop.

Last time I checked London had by far the most extensive public transport system of any city in the UK.
Other cities in Europe have implemented schemes similar to ULEZ without so much as a peep of protest. Just last for example Paris tripled parking rates for vehicles over 1.6 t i.e. all SUVs.

Anyone who insists on driving a car in central London deserves everything that's coming to them. It's not only unnecessary it's also highly anti-social.
It's not Wyoming.

Khans ULEZ zone does not just affect central London, it covers an area of about 600 square miles over all 32 London boroughs. It is nothing more than a cash grab on the motorist.

Good and not before time.
Driving when and where you want without regard for anyone else in the area is not a universal human right and certainly not an automatic entitlement.
If you insist on doing so then be prepared to pay.
That's the way it works in most other major cities in Europe so why should London be exempt. Just because it's a pet project of the Muslim mayor doesn't make it a bad idea.
As I said it's not Wyoming where the only thing competing for road space is the occasional tumbleweed.

Yes it is, it is what we pay our road tax for, to drive, ride, cycle on public roads.

Have I got news for you Labour MPs successfully blocked the Bill and it is highly unlikely to now move forward It was a Private Members Bill, and Labour MPs made sure it did not progress by talking it down, they talked for so long that time simply ran out. Why the hell should devolved powers be given over to places like London, for the government to then simply attempt to block any policy or legislation they dont like, what is the point of allowing The London Assembly or the democratically elected London Mayor to make decisions, and then for the government to block those decisions. www.hertsad.co.uk/news/national/24205365.attempt-overturn-ulez-expansion-london-blocked-commons/

'Be prepared to pay'! Are you fekin serious? Motorists already pay an absolute bloody fortune for the privilege of driving on potholed roads. Insurance VED Fuel + fuel duty + VAT Serving + VAT Repairs & maint + VAT Parking charges + VAT And if you live in London add to that the congestion charge and ULEZ. And you say drivers should be prepared to pay!

The issue isn't central London. It's areas like where I live which are only just inside the zone and don't enjoy the public transport links available further into London and don't have the same issues with air quality. It's a measure that no one voted for, few want and that achieves nothing other than to subsidise a transport system that is unavailable to many of us in outer London.
