We don’t need more police officers with firearms . We need more empathetic left wing fat lesbian police officers . Let's hope a drugs gang does not move close to you. Most senior officers have guns, senior police guys are dying in their dozens due to drug gang infiltration. Heard it from a retired police super a couple of years ago. The police don't make this public due to a crisis of confidence. On youtube I get a feed and every now and then they release the names of officers killed on the job 80s -90s and I grew up in that time and don't recall this. Most deaths are not made public. Whoa there! Tinfoil hat time.

Whoa there! Tinfoil hat time. I spoke to my local firearm officer the other day and he has verified that people wanting to hold firearms and shotguns has doubled over the last week...And it seems that the police may relent to issuing section 7 certificates the same as they have in Ireland which means handguns could be purchased by private individuals. I wonder why people think they need one...Oh wait a minute it isn't rocket science is it?

It's Section 5, Jonksy old chap. And it requires Home Office authority.
That said, I do know of several people who have legally held handguns for self-defence.

I already have a section 5 mate...But in Ireland they have a section 5 variant which is section 7 that allows private individuals to hold a handgun...

OK, one is an ex-army officer apparently permanently placed on an IRA hit list.
The others are similar, although subject to more recent (and ongoing) threats.
