It's a matter of whether they survive as an independent sovereign country. And the only hope they have of survival as an independent sovereign country is by fighting. By the time the Iron Curtain went up FDR was dead and the penny had dropped that the Soviets were going to be a strong adversary. Especially after US scientists covertly gave the secrets of nuclear weapons to the Soviets. Ukraine has shown Russia it cannot walk all over Europe even if it wanted to, the fall back is Nukes. No, I would give Zelenskyy 20,000 HIMARS rockets including 5,000 ATACAMS rockets.
I would give him, hundreds of tanks.
A million artillery shells.
Enough munitions to drive out the invaders.
Because once Putin loses in Ukraine, Russia will turn on Putin and his cronies, and kill them.
Once that happens, it's an opportunity to say to his replacement, work with us.
End the animosity.

I disagree i think Russian nationalists controlling the nukes will go full MAD and then good-bye Europe, Astralasia, Israel and most of North America. From their view-point the Swedes attacked them in the 18th C, the French in the 19th C, the Germans in the 20th C. In the 90s they could have gone nuclear yet instead consented to let a number of former nations choose to go over to the West. Ukraine was split by ethnicity and also religion and had fuel debt with Russia I think Oliver Stone had it right, the Neocons went after the Middle East and the Dems wanted to bring Russia to its knees using the corrupt (according to the EU) Ukraine.
