Seems like a good idea. Who really needs mail delivery on Saturday? In fact, I’d go for Mon-Wed-Fri. Any really urgent/vital mail could go by courier.
I can’t think of any document that today, needs to be guaranteed next-day delivery by mail, that couldn’t be organised differently…

It wouldn't bother me. I rarely receive anything by Royal Mail. Can't remember the last time I bought a stamp. Anything I order online comes by courier.

I'd agree with going to 2 working day delivery - Mon/Wed/Fri one week followed by Tues/Thurs the following. Scrap First Class and just have the existing guaranteed next day small parcel/letter delivery for those needing it.

The break up of the post office I think around 2011 that saw its profitable parcels wing fed to EU competition was the start of the slide to non-profitability . Privatisation failed to rescue its decline and a once great British institution was lost .
Once a week delivery would be OK with me , most of what I do get goes straight in the bin unopened and as with most folk everything is online these days anyway .

The problem with the Royal Mail is that the world has moved on - it is supplying a 19th century service in an age of emails and instant messaging.
Whatever you do it is going to be in permanent decline.

It's all to do with what service is offered and/or wanted, and at what price to the user.
At one time post (mail), telegraphs and telephones were all state-owned by the one body, the GPO (Hull City Council was the exception**). Telegrams have gone, hard-copy mail is rapidly dying, and only telephone, telecommunication and parcel services are thriving. And they have prospered under Privatisation.
The whole UK mail system needs to be overhauled — but, like telecoms — mail is an internationally organised activity under the UN body, the Universal Postal Union so, to remain feasible, it needs to operate under international agreements***. Guaranteeing mail deliveries to every address in the UK within a couple of working days for three days a week seems a reasonable compromise...

The Post Office deliver urgent items on Sundays where I live. PP, are you saying there's no longer 1st and 2nd deliveries?

The Post Office deliver urgent items on Sundays where I live. PP, are you saying there's no longer 1st and 2nd deliveries? The Post Office may accept and hand out mail seven days a week, but if you’re in the UK, Royal Mail (a privatised and separate concern) is responsible for deliveries and, over Christmas, RM may well have laid on extra deliveries. Also, Royal Mail offers special services to larger users. The usual letter and packet service is now one daily delivery Mon to Sat, often including advertising. Your post should be delivered by 3pm if you live in a town or city, or 4pm if you live in a rural area…

Probably because the bulk of Tory voters are elderly types who still hanker after the fifties of two mail deliveries a day and for who three deliveries a week would be considered by them as another swipe at Britain’s greatness…

So why else keep deliveries for six days? And why fund Royal Mail’s losses, currently running at about £1m a day…?

Actually, I wonder how long it will be before this country is considered to be a third world shit tip, end of the century?
