www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-68022923I’m confused Buried deep in this account of the arrest of an accomplice to the escape of a prisoner from HMP Wandsworth is the admission that the escapee has pled NOT GUILTY to the offence of escaping. Excuse me ? What is his defence ? ‘it was’t me guv i was in the shitter unloading last night’s vindaloo ?’

Unbelievable that it even warrants a court case.
He was supposed to be in prison and wasn't.
The end.

I had forgotten, he was imprisoned on remand, he had not actually been convicted of any offence when he did a runner. I see where this is going now, thanks.

It was the escapee’s plea of not guilty that confused me but equivocal’s suggestion above seems to provide a reasonable explanation for what on the face of it is barking mad stupidity. The guy was on remand and if found innocent will be free to go. Pleading guilty to escaping means he potentially gets banged up for that even if he is innocent of what he in in there to face trial on.

The guy was on remand and if found innocent will be free to go. Pleading guilty to escaping means he potentially gets banged up for that even if he is innocent of what he in in there to face trial on. Khalife is charged with three offences collecting information useful to the enemy, allegedly Iran eliciting information about members of the armed forces likely to be useful to a person preparing an act of terrorism perpetrating a bomb hoax Due to the serious nature of the above charges the Judge decided to remand him to await trial in custody as the Court obviously considered him a flight risk , whilst awaiting trial he escaped lawful custody therefore that is an additional charge. As and when he goes before the Court if he has not already entered a plea, then he can enter a plea of Not Guilty or Guilty to the above charges, in fact he cannot be forced to say anything at all, if he does not enter a plea the Judge will automatically treat it as a Not Guilty plea and his trial begins. As for the charge of " Escaping Lawful Custody" Prison it is highly likely that will be dealt with separately after the outcome of his trial on the above charges, the second man who is suspected of helping him to escape Lawful Custody will probably be tried at the same time, a joint venture IMO
