By direct democracy, sure I know politicians are still miffed about it, so are remain, because they are not grown up enough in democracy terms, which is the fault of politicians in the first place. Direct democracy is open to all sorts of political morons who find it an easy platform to invade. At least in Representative Democracy those making the decisions have a responsibility to be informed on the subject, and have access to people who do the research making them streets ahead of the average voter who is almost certainly far more interested in getting along with their lives.

Ah that old chestnut, the electorate aren't informed because politicians don't want them informed, it would relinquish power.

To improve our democracy the HoL as it stands now needs closing down and a replacement that is democratically elected, preferably no party people but all independents. I'm not entirely against some reform of the HoL. But I suspect an elected House would expect to be to have more say in politics, after all they would be the voice of the people. I would definitely like to see a balancing control of politically opinion of members. Not much good if it turned out to be dominated by an excess of Tory or Labour minded individuals. Our democracy was vibrant and meaningful until most of the politicians decided the world was the stage on which they wished to strut and the stepping stones to that world stage were many international organisations including NATO, the EU and all the climate and Gsomething groups. Most have their eye on teh world and the British electorate as purely a stepping stone to that exalted area. We need them to come back down to earth and realise that the UK should be their be all and end all and the British people those they have to look out for first second and last.

Absolutely nothing stops anyone from getting themselves informed on any particular subject. I think the only old chestnut here is possibly yourself

Judging by results it does appear to be the case that too many politicians have lost their way. So my earlier suggestion of making politicians more accountable for what they do and for what they say, might be a good place to start.
