What is being described as a localised tornado ripped through greater Manchester last night damaging buildings and vehicles. The damage is estimated to be at least £200. Apologies, couldn't resist. In other news: A ‘supercell thunderstorm’ has hit the UK, as travel chaos from Storm Gerrit continued into Thursday. The Met Office describes the weather phenomenon as occurring when a thunderstorm is fed lots of warm, humid air and begins to rotate. “Tornadoes usually form from big thunderstorms called supercells,” the forecaster has said as it warned of heavy rain, hail, frequent lightning and gusty winds. It came after a “localised tornado” swept Greater Manchester overnight.
