Its just bonkers. Who owns this country the people or the Bureaucrats.

As far as why we are so compliant, I think its because we stopped caring about other people, so if it happens to someone else we take no action and if it happens to us no one else cares.

How about this one.
The Parish council sent out a survey in our village asking people if they wanted a blanket 20 mph speed limit. Only out of 4,600 people in the village only 120 got the survey and 100 of them said yes. Strange that as no one wants it.
Now we are informed that because of "overwhelming support" its going ahead. We can attend a meeting to hear how its being put in, but we cannot object and anyone trying will be escorted from the hall.

Such surveys are often exercises in fake transparency. We have recent experience of this here in Plymouth, of tree massacre in the dead of night notoriety. The then Tory led council, aware of growing opposition to the planned felling of all the city centre trees as part of some grand redevelopment plan, launched a public consultation which most people heard nothing about. Even the few that did hear about it were nevertheless mostly negative. But they simply discounted those who did not give a reason for their objections and claimed massive public approval, which they knew did not exist. Which is why they decided to do it in the early hours of the morning before opposition could appear. They promptly got slaughtered for this in the local elections handing the council to Labour, most of whom backed the plans but have tried to pretend they didnt.

The thing is, and I know this from my time in the local Labour party, and I doubt that the Tories are any different, local parties keep a whole lot of information on local people that they acquire through canvassing and other means of contact. They have computer databases loaded with information about who has voted for them in the past and who hasnt, as well as about who feels strongly about what. It would be very easy for an incumbent party to use such information in deciding who to contact in any consultation process. Fact is in most such supposed consultation processes, most of us seem to hear nothing. But you can bet your bottom dollar that all those whom they think might be in favour of whatever the council wants to do will be consulted.
