in london, perhaps. Far too many live in quaint english villages. Fairford for example last month seemed still to be the model for Camberwick Green Are quaint English villages not the very essence of England's green and pleasant land. Think of what our Nation stands for, Books from Boots' and country lanes, Free speech, free passes, class distinction, Democracy and proper drains. It's hard to see how something can be simultaneously typical and quaint, by the way.

Then... and now. Interesting contrast. Why did you choose an idyllic village for your first picture, rather than, say, slums in the East End of London (or any other major city)?

We artistic types call it the Chiaroscuro Effect. Caravaggio used it to great effect in heightening the emotional tension in his works.

We artistic types call it the Chiaroscuro Effect. Caravaggio used it to great effect in heightening the emotional tension in his works. We more down-to-earth types call it a false contrast. Your second picture would look positively idyllic compared to actual photographs of life in the slums at that time.

Don't you have an idyllic chocolate box version? 1960S England was so much better. Yes, but that window undoubtedly shows views of rolling green countryside and Bachannates dancing in mountain groves.

People flooded in in their millions because 'it wasn't any better".
That's what's known as an unlikely sounding hypothesis.

You might as well name them 'degrees of good' Okay, slum conditions are good. It doesn't sound right, but have it your way. 'Slum' is a relative word. It makes more sense than theorising that large numbers of people flooded into an area to endure something bad.
