... Why would EU criminals be attracted to the UK? It's certainly not because there's a more lenient sentencing policy. One reason could be that the police don't stop people in the street to ask for 'papers'.

One reason could be that the police don't stop people in the street to ask for 'papers'. Apparently, that is one of the reasons. For example, in France ID cards make it far harder to gain employment, obtain services or disappear into the black economy if one is an illegal.
I suspect that similar applies across Europe: No ID makes you a non-person.

One reason could be that the police don't stop people in the street to ask for 'papers'. Could be. But it's not because the judicial system is soft on crime, as Red suggested. The judicial system comes down hard on offenders (relatively speaking). And the absence of a 'papers' requirement can hardly be blamed on the Left, which would be required if Red's claim that the Left is responsible for attracting them is to be supported.

I don't think it is a 'right or left' thing, more a cultural-historical holdover from the time when Britain was still a trust-based society and British people generally played by the rules.
The influx of going on for 20 million 'new' people who originate from entirely different societies where trust is not a highly-valued socio-cultural attribute and where the police do not operate 'by consent' mean that 'traditional' methods of policing are now inappropriate.
No more Dixon of Dock Green.

It is clear from the judges comments that he pushed the sentence as high as the sentencing guidelines allowed him to in which case those who set those guidelines should see members of their family fall victim to the same crime and then be forced to appear on some cheap tv show to answer the question ‘do you now think this is an adequate sentence’
