Apparently the prisons are full and judges have been told to avoid sending people to prison. Perhaps the judge took that into account. I hope that decision does not cost someone their life.

The US leads the world in the number of its citizens incarcerated, which has led to the country being the most crime free nation on earth

When I was a lad everyone carried a knife, but I don't recall anyone getting 5 years for it.
So who told you that the sentence is 5 years ?

Yes but we are not talking about a 2" pen knife are we ? The guy had a machete . He was/is a drug dealer ,class A drugs at that which carries a max life in prison . In other words the judge had a free hit here with no limit . We need new judges plain and simple , the sentences are there if they want to use them , most don't . A suspended sentence for dealing class A along with possession of a bladed weapon should send out a message to his associates That being ..Grass .

it isn’t five years The maximum penalty for being found unlawfully in posession of a knife is FOUR years. And thats a maximum not a default. It’s five for a gun. Source : metropolitan police website which is itself in breach of the law for not properly processing my cookie refusals. Couldn’t make it up !!
