The future is electric - it's simply the method of electricity supply that's in question. Li-ion batteries are an obvious dead end because of so many factors (and safety is a major issue). My opinion is that battery power of any kind is not practicable because of their weight, the time it takes to charge them and the number of charging stations that would be needed. The industry seems to be hoping that solid-state batteries will solve these problems but it won't - though they will be safer.
That leaves hydrogen (via a hydrogen fuel cell). This is far more practical but it does involve the govt actually encouraging the roll out of hydrogen stations, which they don't seem to want to do. Presently we have 13 hydrogen pumps in the UK.
Petrol cars (and diesel lorries) will still be the majority in 50 years time. I'd bet anything on it.
