I’m going to take one tiny bit of the early post and run with it. I’d like any replies to stick squarely to that. The suggestion was made that asylum seekers be made (shall I use “invited”) to work here while waiting for their claim to be processed. That would be illegal under all sorts of legislation ironically much introduced in the past 20 years to do lip service to making it appear this country cares about not giving illegal entrants the ability to make money here … Are we to repeal all that ? I would guess such people would be granted a work visa, thus negating the issue?

I think I’d like to challenge this assertion that only the left want asylum seekers given asylum. The fact is there are far too many places on this planet where someone who can quite legally be, think, say or do something in Hyde Park will get hauled off by the secret police if they stand being, thinking, saying or doing that very same thing in Teheran, Baghdad, Moscow, Beijing…. I could go on but I’m sure you get my point. The ASYLUM system is there to protect the lives and well being of people who, if they had a British Passport and manifested their wishes in London would have the protection of the law but in the country for which that have a passport it is a very different story The problem, which I think everyone knows but most wish to Ignore, is that the left want anyone and everyone to be able to wander in and help themselves. The devolved governments are even giving the people that make it the Damon VOTE to push the see saw even harder to one tilt. I think this is a misconception. The extreme left don't want the world to come here, but they do fear branding anyone who arrives as undeserving. The equivalent of refusing to say a criminal is a bad person, but rather they are someone let down by society. And yes I do think this has swung too far to the left and is allowing those who damage society to get away without public sanction. When a child rips the toilet cistern off the wall and their parent tells you its your fault for creating a gap they could get their fingers into, then you know the pendulum needs correcting.

I would guess such people would be granted a work visa, thus negating the issue? No, they won’t. I have experience of the reality. A work colleague of mine from many years ago retired and threw her energies what was left of them into assisting asylum cases. A chap who assisted the British forces in Afghanistan with translations was brought here and pretty much dumped into a system where he could not work and was entirely dependent on charity and food vouchers until the authorities got round to assessing his case. I would agree people in this situation SHOULD be given the means to earn their living here but the sick fact is they are mixed in with the obvious economic migrants with no right to enter and the whole thing just blows up. It’s not right but since when has any government done right by anyone. At least this chap is in this country (I heard of his case which I hope to god is sorted now a good few years ago). Too many of his kind (by which I mean they worked with the UK or US forces) have been simply abandoned to be rooted out and shot.

I think with respect you have misunderstood the thread, John. We are discussing in this thread how the asylum system could work better not how it works now. The more emotive asylum threads are on other subforums - there are plenty of them.

The ASYLUM system is there to protect the lives and well being of people who, if they had a British Passport and manifested their wishes in London would have the protection of the law but in the country for which that have a passport it is a very different story This notion is completely unsupportable and would amount to the most valued, democratic, prosperous and free societies, systematically committing suicide. It would make societies people want to live in essentially responsible for providing their value to everyone else. However, I can't put a sheet of thin paper between your description above and the actual in place aims and philosophy of the asylum project itself. The whole notion needs to be urgently reviewed purely on practical and moral grounds. It's clearly a ludicrous scam. The problem, which I think everyone knows but most wish to Ignore, is that the left want anyone and everyone to be able to wander in and help themselves. The devolved governments are even giving the people that make it the Damon VOTE to push the see saw even harder to one tilt. I think they are aware that everyone coming here would not be plausible - they merely want to push the notion that nothing should be done to prevent this to the point of societal collapse.

I like the fact that the Tories say they are taking drastic steps as if they haven't been in power for 12 years and done nothing.
Still taking a year to process people, still putting them in hotels, still no attempt to process them before they arrive on our beeches.

Really, in what way have the opposition stopped the Tories from speeding up processing or providing sufficient accommodation over the last 12 years. Its a shame the opposition were unable to stop 12 years of austerity and get taxes increased on the rich. I guess they are limited to purely negative effects.
