Reports are emerging of giant rats (the size of small dogs) in the west end of Glasgow. Due to ULEZ restrictions the bin lorries are not allowed into the area and overflowing bins are attracting monster rats.
Can any of our Scottish correspondents explain why this has happened, and also give details of why Scottish rats are superior to English rats.

Another case of an SNP bad story. Bins are emptied every three weeks in Moray yet there has been no rat infestation. The answer must lie elsewhere. The GMB is a rabid anti SNP and Independence union as this story from 2013 shows www.heraldscotland.com/news/13131099.gmb-backed-no-vote---asked-members-indyref-views/ I wonder what the political persuasion of the residents mentioned are. I note that this story dates back to July. I also note the same story was published in the ultra red tory supporting rag the Record a couple of days ago. Part of the wider anti SNP campaign. You'd think that there was an election looming: oh, there is and it's only a few miles away. |

Allegedly if you live in a City it is said you are no more than a few yards from a Rat, the reason you have an infestation of rats is if food is readily available , if the wheelie bins are full and overflowing the rats get in, people who fly tip bags of waste all over the place will also attract foxes and cats.
Dumping Sofas matrasses ,soft furnishings will attract rats, mice and insects, a few bad lazy residents can make life hell for the rest of the local residents,

There has been a notable rise in rat infestations throughout the UK. Earlier this year, Direct Line insurance company submitted a freedom of information request to every authority in Britain and 181 responded with usable data. Metro has printed a ‘rat map’ of the worst rodent infestations across the country. The municipality with the highest incidence of rat infestation is Swansea, in Wales, with 16,767 cases in 2022. This was followed by the London borough of Southwark with 16,664. Birmingham is next with 12,736 cases. Liverpool had 10,373 and Glasgow came in fifth overall in the UK with 10,323 infestations recorded in 2022. It must be said in Glasgow's favour, although they have been beaten in the league table by Wales and England, they do in fact boast the largest rats, presumably these rats achieve their impressive girths due the the food leftovers that they consume, a diet of fried food, deep fried mars bars, haggis, black puddings and iron brew, this diet combined with a lack of personal and community hygiene does leapfrog Glasgow to first position.

Credit where credit is due. I've seen no mention of Glasgow's rats being compared in size to rats elsewhere. If you have a link for that, please post it. What I have read in the link above is that whereas Wales has seen an 8% increase in rat infestations in the year prior to last, Southwark (London) has seen a 90% rise in infestations and Eastbourne, East Sussex a whopping 188% rise in rat infestations in the same one year period. Clearly this is not simply a Scottish problem. |
