Now Switzerland is a member of EFTA yet has resisted becoming a full member.
There are number of reasons like having to contribute to the EU budget much more than EFTA.
Their agricultural subsidies and social welfare system.
The potential for immigration as they have three languages is high so they have their own process before granting residency.
They also know the EU is not into negotiation and the Swiss put more things to the vote than other nations.
So although having the EU as their biggest trading partner they are happy to stay on the periphery.
