Verhofstadt paving way for 'totalitarian superstate' with bid to strip members of EU veto
Arch-Europhile MEP Guy Verhofstadt has been accused of trying to turn the EUSSR into a "totalitarian supra-national authority" with a package of proposals including one which would see member states stripped of their vetoes.
Mr Verhofstadt's ideas are set out in a 116-page draft document which, in the unlikely event that they are eventually adopted, would introduce qualified majority voting in dozens of areas including defence, taxation and foreign policy.
The proposals contained in the dossier - obtained by the Politico website - would dramatically enlarge the powers of the European Parliament, and - crucially - prevent members of the EUSSR27 from blocking legislation.
Ben Habib who as a former Brexit Party MEP, who campaigned to take Britain out of the bloc after the 2016 referendum, ex-Belgian PM Mr Verhofstadt's suggestions come as vindication.
He told Express.co.uk: "Guy Verhofstadt, the arch EU imperialist, wants Brussels to take another giant step towards ever closer union.

Surely, democracy is about giving effect to the wishes of the majority. If one party can override the wishes of the majority with a veto, that doesn't sound particularly democratic. Of course, it can be justified if that's what the majority want. As can Verhofstadt's proposals. What's the basis of your claim that majority governance is undemocratic, Jonks?

Guy Verhofstadt is an isolated loser nowadays. All he has left is tawdry rags like the Express buying him lunch so they can recount his idiot views to their idiot readers

I'm curious, Jonks. You know this 'proposed' move to remove the veto? Can a member state veto that?

The EU is undergoing treaty change. Until the treaty has changed the EU is in a state of flux. It could change for the better it could change for the worse.
Proposals include giving MEPs legislative initiative. That would take power away from the unelected Commission.
Proposals also include the end of vetoes and unanimity to be replaced with QMV. Mr Verhofstadt is not on his own. He is not isolated. There's 101 MEPs in his bloc, it has more influence than all of the UK's ex MEPs had collectively when we were members.

Either way it's still not and won't be a dictatorship.

Maybe not, but it's not much of a democracy either (and neither is our country for that matter before you mention it). It needs reform, and this treaty change is being debated.
I'll see what happens.
There are good bits and bad bits in what has been proposed so far.

Frankly the EU has taken on too many 'competencies' and too many members. But it does manage that mess fairly well and democratically. No democracy instantiation is ever perfect or ever exactly what all would choose.

If it was a dictatorship, we wouldn't have been allowed to leave, people like me would either be in prison, or dead.
