In 2016-17 the cost to the NHS of medical negligence payouts was £1.6 billion ... a fourfold rise in 10 years. In 2022-23 the cost was £2.6 billion. The total cost of all medical mistakes in 2022-23 ... negligence payouts and the cost of correcting medical mistakes that did not result in claims was £6.6 billion ... 3.5% of the NHS budget.
An example of a corrected medical mistake: A patient is told by his hospital Consultant: "I've looked at your test results. Everything's OK you can go home". The very next morning the patient receives a phone call from his GP: "I've just looked at your test results. You're at high risk of further heart attacks. I'm sending you straight back".
When my father was diagnosed in hospital as having had a minor stroke and discharged his GP thought otherwise and ordered an MRI scan ... which identified a brain cancer which was successfully operated on.
I wonder to what extent GPs are now "checking up" on what the hospitals say about their patients?

Not being funny but this isn't medical negligence, if only it were.
This is out-and-out murder by a serial killer, no amount of compensation or negligence pay out is going to sort this one out, Lucifer Letby has now risen to the ranks of the UKs worst child murderer, if now possibly the World.
All this under the very nose of our own NHS, think you need to start a different thread, because 'money' is not the motive for this thread.

My experience of hospitals leads me to wonder to what extent is medical negligence willful? An elderly friend warned me some time ago ... be careful about complaining ... it can be dangerous. Letby is an extreme example of a personality type that "gets off" on harming, even causing the deaths of patients, and getting away with it. Every hospital has them. Matrons used to have the power to sack them before they did too much harm. Letby's behaviour caused "red flags" amongst the staff that Matron's could have a acted upon in the past. "Here's your cards, You're sacked. Go find another profession". Letby was in the habit of being where she shouldn't. An old style matron would have noticed this.

Totally agree with you, hope you do start a separate thread on your above post, I think you have a very valid point, it deserves its own thread because this one is focused on the babies that died at the hands of Lucifer.

Letby should have been reported for making racist comments or slagging off trans people on Facebook, she would have been suspended with 'immediate effect', hence saving the lives of babies in her care, and there you have it.

She should have been reported to the Police, immediately, rather than management.

Interesting comment there that the evidence isn’t all that strong and it isn’t imo, unpopular though it may be I am uneasy with this whole affair which has been turned in to a grisly soap opera with people popping up all over the place explaining why they have proof positive of her guilt when the reality is there’s very little, and now there’s a media frenzy to make her the biggest female serial killer ever. The blame game is in full swing and the desire to appear on the media seems to me at least over ride the desire to get on with their jobs. If you care to look around there are several examples of poor neo natal care where hundreds of babies and some mothers too have died without little comment.

THIS POST - is surely evidence of what I stated earlier, as the NHS becomes more and more stretched, and with critical staff shortages, this points to more errors, more mistakes. The same has happened in our police forces, and in other public services, lack of resources, cuts to budgets, cuts in staff numbers, you get a worse service and mistakes are made. A psychopath or murderer is what they are, and overstretched staff and lack of staff would have made no difference, but what I am correctly pointing out is that perhaps, or just maybe, when the NHS was PROPERLY staffed and resourced before the Tories came to power, someone might have picked up on it, or noticed something, or had the time to raise a question. Tory cuts to the NHS do have consequences - as with ambulance response times which have seriously deteriorated - people have died.

This is rather mealy mouthed imo. The issue was noticed and a decision was taken to 'un-notice'. HR used stress positions on the medical staff and forced apologies out of them. It takes resources to be that dumb If may well have not have happened if they long ago decommissioned the HR / DEI department and sent these useless people home rather than forcing the taxpayer to fork out for them, pretending they have a job and giving them authority over medical staff.

One of the Doctors who gave evidence against Letby since her trial ended has been studying other child patients paperwork not used or connected to her trial and is very concerned about seven infants deaths, he thinks she may have murdered more babies, he has made his concerns known to Cheshire Police
